Kusoge

Translation: Crappy Games

It's kinda like B-movies that gain a following purely for how bad it is. But I'm not talking about infamous, underdeveloped, buggy, no-quality-control games that were published during the dark age of video games. I've poked my head into a couple different RPG Maker communities and a lot of projects revolve around humor. Where liking something ironically is part of the fun. They say puns are the lowest form of comedy but I think this is a new low. Celebrating cliches and constantly breaking the 4th wall. Trying to be as bizarre as possible.
I guess there's been a few successful and strange games on tumblr. But I think it had more to do with the popularity of let's play videos that encouraged people to be as goofy as possible. Can't laugh at me if you're laughing with me.

Maybe it's not fair to label amateur games kusoge.
If we look at rpg maker games there is a lot of poor mapping and storytelling. We can agree that mixing artstyles is bad. But at least they're not using real photographs with white artifacts around the edges, you know?

There are poor games, and then there are attempts at poor games as an art style, like SBAHJ (comic) or Bluxxon Quest. But, it has to be said, while Bluxxon/SBAHJ are attempts to portray bad art, they're actually very difficult to replicate, and take a lot of skill to get right. I tried to do homages in the eZine and failed spectacularly. It's like the noise music Teloch used to make by editing MP3 files as plain text, it seems easy and silly but actually takes some skill to pull off.
