Are any of your other USB devices working?  If so, try unplugging some of them, or try using a different USB port for your keyboard for starters.  The fact that you say you're having this problem whenever Windows updates is odd, you might have to research that one a bit.  You don't typically see any changes to the way USB is handled in Windows updates, the USB driver is built into Windows XP and I don't think it's changed for several years; perhaps it's updating your motherboard drivers and the drivers it installs are older or gimpy?

hmm... well im not good with computers but it connects to the back of the pc and it makes a sound when plugged in yet it still ignores the device.

usully when this happens i just restart my pc...

I AM REALLY GETTING PISSED!!!!!

Ok... so I plugged it into the front (it's slightly bigger that the hole but it fits)

I think a fuse was blown out in the back.

If it works in a front USB port the issue is your rear USB, it's probably just busted.  They can get loose and wiggle off the board to the point that they're not getting contact anymore with extended use, or the little black piece of plastic can break out; that happens a lot.  I think every PC I own over 2 years old has a USB port with one of those two problems.  There's not really any novice-level way to fix that except get a new mobo though.

this may be a silly question but if it does it everytime windows updates, why don't you just stop windows updating... I  remeber turning windows update off a long time ago after it updated and crashed making me have format.

Turning off windows updates is BAD generally speaking.  You don't have to leave automatic updates on, but you definitely want to be regularly obtaining security updates.  Those updates fix bugs and security holes in windows components used by viruses to really fuck you over.

If an update hoses your system, formatting is serious overkill; you can usually boot into safe mode and uninstall them via Add/Remove programs (just tick the checkbox in the top right corner).  If that fails just pop in your Windows disc and do a repair installation; not the first option (Repair the system using recovery console or something like that) but the second time it asks, after it says it detected a current windows installation.

However there have only been a few updates that I remember that caused problems for a large number of people; one of them was the IE7 update, which when combined with AOL 9.0 rendered many computers completely unusable, and another involved a security update.  I don't remember precisely what the problem was, but simply uninstalling the update in safe mode and disabling its installation within automatic updates fixed it.  Service pack 1 and 2 both caused issues too at one point in time but that's ancient history now.
