It's a Perfect World

Perfect World International

Those that frequent IRC will know how much I've been flailing happily over this game.  So what is it?  Simply put, it's a blatant World of Warcraft clone, and it doesn't try to pretend it isn't (like, say, most other MMOs?).  In fact, the only thing that makes it different from WoW is the lack of quirky characteristics of most all monsters and player characters.  This doesn't mean it's less endearing; if anything it makes up for it in other ways, like the ability to fly around after a certain level.  And what you fly around on depends on your race, so it isn't a boring and uniform thing -- and I don't care what you say, being a human Blademaster and surfboarding the sky ON YOUR SWORD is damn awesome.

While Perfect World itself has been out for awhile now (it originated in Korea I believe), PWI is fairly new and has only been out in open beta for a few months, so do expect some bugs or oddities (you'll mostly notice this if you start an Archer, but these are quickly overcome if you raise your character right).  Not only that, but new and better things are coming out all the time.

The game runs very well, even on a poor system (my laptop can run it with full graphics, and that can't even run most games these days).  The only downside is it's pretty large -- close to 3GB -- and takes awhile to download.  However, once you have it installed, any updates that come out are FAST to download and update -- the longest update for me only taking a few minutes.  Also, their server maintenance times are short: only an hour every week.

Oh, and did I mention it was free to play?

Races and Classes (and my opinions on them)
  • Humans
    • Blademaster - The typical "warrior" class of the game.  Blademasters can be damn good tanks, and get some of the coolest attacks in the game.
    • Wizard - I haven't played this much, but from what I've seen, Wizards can be a fun class to play... if you've got a good backup weapon so you don't get pummeled when an enemy gets too close.
  • Untamed
    • Venomancer (female only) - Those familiar with the term "kenomimi" will understand what a Venomancer looks like.  These literally foxy ladies are good spellcasters, and can get their own personal tank in the form of monsters that you can tame and hatch, making the best class to solo with.  At level 8 they can also turn into a fox, which gives them a boost to their speed and attack.  They're also the fastest moving characters out of all the classes.  By the way, if you don't like the fox look, the presets also have a devil, cat, and bunny theme.
    • Barbarian (male only) - These are the mega tanks, when a Blademaster can't get the job done.  These guys hit the hardest and deal the most damage, and also can survive for longer than Blademasters.  However, they're slow when in their humanoid form.  They can transform into a tiger when their level is high enough.
  • Winged Elves
    • Cleric - The healer class; however, they're not pussies like most healers in games.  Clerics in this game are weaker than Blademasters, but can hold their own in a fight, at least long enough to heal themselves before continuing to dish out punishment.  They also have a nice host of attack and defensive magic to keep them going.
    • Archer - Winged Elves are the only race that can fly at level one, but they suffer heavy magic draining penalties because of it, and you can REALLY feel it in the archer class.  However, if you raise your Archer right, you end up with a hell of a character that can dish out over 200 points per hit as long as they're far enough away at an early level.  Just remember if you choose this class to keep your dexterity AT LEAST four points over your magic stat.

Some Screenshots
Most of these are of my archer -- I normally hate a long-range class, but it's a lot of fun to play her.

GET IT!
Okay, I've pitched how awesome it is, so now it's time for people to check out the website.  Maybe if enough people join up, we can start an RMXP.org guild on it.

Perfect World International

Looks fun, might download it (when I'm done with Peggle Nights :P)

Is there an RMXP guild? DURRR!! :B

1.) What level are most RMXPers?
2.) How easy is it to join up and party?
3.) What classes are most played and what classes are looked for the most in groups?
4.) How's levelling? Are there quests?
5.) Are people mostly friendly/civil/not retarded high schoolers?
6.) How's the translation?

1.) Only a few people have joined up; I don't know how far sixty has progressed, but I think Zari has been going nuts on his blademaster.  I personally have a lvl. 17 Blademaster, lvl 7 Cleric, lvl 8 Venomancer, and lvl 13 archer.  There's enough space for characters to have one of each class, and I believe an extra character.  I'm not sure.

2.) It's pretty easy to join up with people even at early levels.  I've had random 30+ come up to my blademaster and ask. O.o;

3.) Humans are pretty balanced, I've seen a lot of both classes.  Same with the Untamed.  As for the Elves, there are fewer archers because they are a very hard class to raise if you don't understand how to get over their crippling MP sucking right away.  But I just gave away the trick to it, so I expect to see more archers. :P

4.) Leveling is quick for the first few levels, but gradually starts to tapper down the higher you get.  As for quests, they're EVERYWHERE, though most do just consist of killed "such and such amount of this monster", so you may as well grab a quest, kill the monsters you'd need to grind on anyway, and then run back to the quest giver to get the sweet EXP and Spirit reward.  Around level 17 (hi my blademaster) you get to encounter your first boss creature.  They're... yikes. XD;

5.) Most people are very nice.  Like I said, I've had random freaking people ask to party just because we're in the same location at the same time; even made friends with a former WoW player that said he actually liked this over that game.  The worst I've seen is the global message in that last screen shot, and the dude was suspended soon after sending it.  The GMs don't tolerate shit like that. :x

6.) Good.  There's some noticeable "This game was not in English first" errors in grammar, but tolerable.  Once in a blue moon you'll encounter an item that still has text in Korean, but one hasn't been found since the game first went into open beta.

Ok, well I'm gonna download it now, but sadly I won't have much time to play it until I beat Peggle Nights, FFT:WotL, Dead Rising, Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness, SCIV, and a million other games (not to mention work and production on my own game) :<, but I'll give it a try tomorrow or this weekend for a bit, and if it's really cool I might bump it up my list of games to play ^_^

Thanks for the find!

EDIT: Oh yeah, one last question, what server are you all on?

There are only two servers at the moment.  Heaven's Tear, which is PvE and Lost City, with is PvP.  Obviously, if you're new, stick to Heaven's Tear.  I'm used to it, and I'm still sticking to the PvE server. :x  If you really want to fight other players, though, you can challenge them to duels.

Necroposting for reasons of thinking it's stupid to waste a perfectly valid thread.

Anyone here still playing this?

If so list name ans server.

Name: Mimiiru
Server: Sanctuary.

I applied for a job with them several weeks ago and did receive a follow-up. I'm supposed to be hearing from them shortly.

The game is pretty good. I don't play myself at my home home, but I have played at a family members house. I think I might open my own account though.
