Is my PS2 offically dead?

Basically, what happened is...

I bought Xenosaga Episode 1 recently (It was on sale for 5 bucks, and I already own Episode 3, so yeah). When I put it in my PS2, one of two things will happen.

A.It'll try to read it, but fail, and display the message "Cannot Read Disc".

B.It won't even try to read it.

I would of brushed this off as a bad disc, but my extremely scratched up games (Tales of the Abyss, Kingdom Hearts 2, Tales of Legendia, etc.) work perfectly fine. Xenosaga has no scratches or smudges on it. And my JP PS2 can read is as a Playstation 2 disc just fine(Still won't play due to region encoding though). Should I just chalk this up as me just being unlucky, or do you think it's high time I replaced it?

1) You might try a cleaning disc. They are fairly cheap, and they usually have ones that work for multiplay gaming systems. Just put in the disc and it cleans the head or something...

2) Its weird how its the only one not working. This could mean that its breaking down (I know i've heard of systems starting with one game, and then the rest start to follow). Or it could be maybe its a bad disc, besides it not having scratches, I relaly dont know. You could always try borrowing a copy from a friend or renting one to find out...

Those are just two suggestions. But if you plan to not get a PS3 anytime soon, and you still have much to play on your PS2, might be worth the investment to just get a new one anyways. Since they are pretty cheap now a days.

My only question is... TotA and KH2 are under your extreemly scratched list of games?! For SHAME! I dont understand how people scratch discs so badly anyways... seems pretty difficult to me...

Edit: Btb, i dont know if this would effect anything... but have you tried putting your PS2 on its side? (or if its already on its side, on its belly) I hear thats helped some systems in the past.

I tried putting it on it's side, doesn't work. And Xenosaga isn't the first game to not work, it's just the latest one, and it should work, considering it's new. Also, TotA and KH2 are only scratched because I played them too much. :p

You might have dirtied the lens, try another game and see if it works. If it doesn't, they're may be a underlining problem with the disc that you can't see.

Like he said, dirtied lens can do that. Which is why i suggested the cleaning disc. It has little brushes on its surface that clean the lens. I know my PS2 would not play certain games, but others, at times, and using such a disc always helped. But of course, it could be the system.

Well, other games do work, so I guess it's the disc? I dunno though, it has been acting up lately. Like, with Tales of Legendia, sometimes the music and voices cut out and the only thing playing are the sound effects.

Agreed with Zankoku. Get a lens cleaning disc. They are cheap and run it in your PS2 a few times (1 or 2). Make sure you get the "wet" kind. It has a cleaning solution you put on the brushes and they work much better than the "dry" kind (I worked in a video store for over a year).

If that doesn't work, I have some questions for you:

1) Are there any deep scratches on the disc, or multiple shallow scratches? Hold the disc up to a light source (light bulb or sunlight) with the shiny side of the disc facing you. Do you see any little holes of light coming through? If you do, the disc is pretty much FUBAR and you'll need to get a new one (data is damaged and irreparable).

2) What color is the bottom of the disc?

3) How old is your PS2?

The first wave of PS2s had a glitch in the disc reading laser that caused it to lose power over time. After a few years, it would weaken to the point it would stop reading some discs. Typically, blue-bottomed discs were the first to go, followed by the black-bottomed and then, finally it would stop reading discs all together.

That's what happened to mine. If it is outside of your warranty (it is), you may need to get a new PS2, or wait for the PS3 :(

A repair shop may be able to replace the laser, too.

Awesome Bro

i have this problem with 2 of my PS2s. ONe cant play DVD movies, PS1 games and God of war, my 2nd one cant play god of war... but my 3rd one works fine so its all good.

I had this issue with 2 PS2's the first time it was because the ps2 was from the first wave and it would not play any newer PS2 games.

Second time my laser had a nice scratch on it.
(From what I don't know)

Lucky me my friend's ps2 broke so i jacked his laser.
if it is the disc i know there's a ton of places that resurface disc with that machine that looks like a toilet for like 5 bucks.

It sounds like the DRE problem to me, honestly. When my PS2 went DRE, it would read some games but not others, even to the bitter end. If you can find a DVD head cleaner, try to make sure it's compatible with the PS2.

Otherwise, call Sony and see if they will fix it for free. They did for mine. I just had to pay to ship it to them, and had it back 6 days later, repaired, not refurbished.

Well, I tried the CD Lens Cleaner. Nothing has changed at all. Hell, my PS2 has trouble reading the cleaner disc, and I had to press "Play" multiple times for the stupid voice instructions to come up. It still refuses to read Xenosaga and now it's having trouble reading my other games.

this has yet to be said but maybe it could be the system has maybe captured dust inside major parts of the ps2 and or inside near the lens more then just the lens being dirty i constantly use a Airsoft* spray can to clean it out its just air in a can Airsoft is the cheapest and sprays nice >. > so if you can get that yea give it a nice cleaning! some tender love and care never hurt good luck man with it and i hope it works for you if not theres always the ps3 ^^;;;;;;

Wow. I would lose all hope in the world if my PS2 stopped working. Seriously, I didn't think it was possible for a ps2 to go bad, aside from that one little gear that some ps2's have problem-o's with (which can be fixed easily).

I think it's probably easier just to get a new ps2, a slimline won't set you back much money any more and you wont ever have the problem of dust on the laser (happened to me before >_<)

How old is your PS2? because if I'm not mistaken the older modules have difficulty reading dual layered disks and if some of the games that don't work happened to be dual layers you would be screwed.

Ok there are many things that you need to look at. First what modle to you have. A lot of older modles had a lot of lens errors, and sony will fix it. The only thing with that is they will pay up to the value of your system. That means if they fix it and that cost more than a new system you must pay for it.

Now that's not the end of the line for you. It may not be your system taking a shit on you. Go to Playstation.com and check out their site. On there they have a spot where you can see what games don't work on what modles. You may just have that modle and a game that won't play on it. Check it out if nothing else you can get this program called psxbox for soft modded xboxs and play it on there. You may have to tweek it a little but it will play just fine. You can also get a psx emulator for your PC and it should work on there too, and maybe a little better just harder to control. I guess since we're all use to playing computer games it shouldn't be that big of a problem.

Um....I don't see how a PSX emulator can play Xenosaga 1....a PS2 game. Anyways, I just got off the phone with Sony, and they say they can refurbish it for 45 bucks. Considering that's half the price of a USED, "fat" PS2, I think it's a good deal.

well, did you leave the disc that direct sunlight reaches the refelctive part? coz' before I left some of my game near my study table (beside a window) and they stopped working. My cousin said that it was bad and it damages the disc.

I don't know, well did you?
