Is it just me, or?

With the way the DS and the PSP are heading... Sprites are going to become Obsolete... the only place for sprites are really safe... Are Tactical RPG games... Like Disgaea...

As long as one can draw... they can't replace the artistic talents of one... but it's better to attempt to make it into the industry using your artistic talent of you have one... Putting out Art book after art book... and doing art for random games... eventually you'll get noticed... like a My Space trend...

I'd rather focus on the ability to create a fascinating story... and create a comic for my story using my talent..

then have a video game follow suit... and keep hiting and pushing those until one or the other makes it..

those that can draw have a place reserved for them in the world if they use it correct...

It wont die cus its an alternative, not a thing to become obsolete. Its like the Baroque period, following the Rennaisance. Technically superior, certainly, but it definetly lacked the character and context of the Rennaisance. @d and 3d are options, not evolutions of one another. That's why 3d, even now as hard as some try(like, say, appleseed), can't completely emulate the look and feel of 2d. They're trying because once they get it right, it'll be easier than 2d. But until then, the two medias are alternatives. It'll be far into the future before 2d animation becomes an "artistic style" of 3d mapping and shading that can live up to what it attempts to emulate.

That's not completly true Ryan. Cell Shading works for people wanting a mix of 3-D and 2-D. And many games pull it off well.

want to be REALLY scared to learn programming?

Really, take programming in college, and work your way up. If your 15 and want to make games, do it. It will take hard work, but keep at it and you can do anything. As far as art/programming ect, dont worry about it unless thats the field you want to work in.
IF you want to be a programmer, just learn programming, dont waste time on learning graphics, it will only handicap you. Compnaies want you really skilled in one area, the one they hire you for! They dont need any mediocre "jack-of-all-trades."
You are at the right point in you rlife to start specializing, if you want to go for the gold, there is no better time that today.

That's his fear though. It's like this:
Imagine a bottle maker who only knows how to make bottles, that's what he dad taught him to do and all he's ever done. What happens when a machine takes his job over? He's screwed. A specialized spriter, he thinks, could end up royally screwing themselves if it's completely outsourced in 4 or 5 years. Its a valid concern. I myself planned on being a traditional movie animator for Disney, and if I persued that I'd be hurting for work right now even with all the proper education.

ultimately, when the great developers retire, who will replace them? People who strive, and strive hard. His concern is very valid, but really, the game developers who are making stuff now, like Spore in the vid above, have been doing it from the beginning. You can never expect to learn all you need to know while IN college. Most of everything you learn that has some weight is that in job experience, which means if you have to start off programming games that end up in the $5 bin at walmart, so be it. you ae still getting the experience.
So, I say go for it, learn what you can, but, something I am learning harcore right now, life is not easy and WILL NOT be handed to you on a silver plate, You have to make it happen. And that takes work that requires you to lose sleep and mature.

It's not just that, it's also dealing with the competion. No matter what you do or where you work, there's always a company better then you. I can just imagine how it must be for a rookie company to face off againest companies lijke Namco, EA, and Capcom. Unless you work for them, your on your own. Hard work can only go so far, a lot of it is natural talent.
