Internet Censorship for Kids

A load of ways of monitoring the internet exist for children, but really I think once the kid hits the teens they should be allowed free internet. I mean, a boy who never gets a chance to, you know, will actually probably end up far more perverted than one who has access to pornography.

There's certain browsers that parents download, such as KidZui, that give children a restrained internet space with basic internet protocols for communicating with friends that are guaranteed to be children as well, as their parents have to give the child's parents their IM username. But things like that should only be attached to primary (elementary and middle-school) kids. Once they're in secondary (high-school) they should be given a free choice.

There's a lot of bad shit on the internet, especially on websites like the *chans, that can really mentally disturb a kid under 13. I think that they should not be allowed to be subjected to material like that.

like what if they saw 2girls1cup or something

i'm worried a lot less about "what if they saw X nasty thing!" and a lot more about "what if X solicits them or they join some kind of adult community etc".

kids arent going to develop deviant behavior from accidentally stumbling onto a shock image or the like. it's communities which indoctrinate and slowly and socially mold a kid into a frame of mind that's what's to worry about. that's what parents need to keep watch over most of all, not random smatterings of porn. but the porn and shock photos is what most of them care about. all the siteblockers do is allow parents to maintain a shield of ignorance.

True, but if the kid grows up believing porn to be right and that, it could also cause a female one to wish to sell themselves.

Communities can largely change a person, or upset them. There's a lot of stuff on the internet, even forums, that I really think any 10 year old should not be subjected to.

NO girl would ever think it glamorous to sell themselves. And I would THINK that raising them with high self esteem would negate ANY image material they'd EVER be subjected to. But if they eventually ended up making a living off porn or naked photos I wouldn't kill myself over it. I can't say I'd be thrilled but I would understand ... There's a lot of money there. I'd just worry about the company she keeps in a profession like that.

I think if a young girl saw internet porn more than a couple times, she'd begin to notice how artificial and tasteless it was. Even if I'm being optimistic, at least it wouldn't cause her to think, "That's what I want to do when I grow up."

I wish this was something we covered a lot more in my media effects class. Children, as mawk and others say, do not have to be exposed to something to know that it's bad. A kid doesn't sit down at the computer giving out their address everyday on a YahooChatroom or what have you everyday, but it does happen, and normally these kids think that such an action is okay to do, because some caregivers don't say 'now when you're online, don't X Y or Z'. If YOU, as the parent, know how to use a computer (which a fair share of us here do) then I think a lot of these horrible scenarios of kids being exposed to all sorts of things can be easily prevented. It's the same thing with television and such, which was what I focused most of my studies on.
In regards to kids on the internet, a 9 year old requested to be my friend on Facebook. Wonderful. <_<
