Implementing cards to the battle system Idea

Alright, working on an unamed project, in which the main theme is the characters and world inhabitants using cards and decks rather than magic and spells.

Now, I need the best way to implement this visually, and mechanically. My current idea is changing the name of mana and magic to card related things, and before each ability is cast, it shows a card flipping over on the battle screen or something. obviously this is the most basic approach. I would also need to consider if its a real duel, in which the characters are themselves, OR if in battle it IS part of the game, to where each character would have an avatar ( card, magical, or digital self) whatever.


An accessory would be a deck, and each deck gives you different cards ( spells to use in battle) so equipping diffferent ones gives different abilities for battle.

ALSO I made a random booster item, to where you use it in battle to replentish you deck ( mana or magic use) and it also has the chance to give you a RARE card, which would appear in your inventory as an item to use in battle, sort of like a special summon. After you open the booster it informs you if you received a card or not, and if so, states which card you recieved.


So yeah.... that's the basics. I would LOVE ideas thrown out for more system and visual work, if not a better way of doing this. Also, comments on the whole regular character or avatar thing would be appreciated.

[EDIT] Some basic changes I made that I might or might not stick with


The gameplay will, from the tournament on, be adventuring through the island searching for opponents to duel and win against to gain enough point to enter the final matches. Different terrain, dungeons, puzzles and other challenges await. Rest points will have card shops to buy new decks and booster packs to up your game. YOu're also able to unlock new patrons and upgrade their abilites.

As far as battle, Xander prefers to use himself as one of the patrons, a tactic never before seen or used by another duelist thus far. Equipping different decks gives xander and his other patrons different abilities to use in a battle. Patrons can also equip armors and weapons. Booster packs can be used in battle to replentish your cards available and also mkay give you a rare card which will summon a special attack.
 
This is like Avatar: The Last Airbender and things like that, right? I can't remember if I've seen anything like this released before, but I do remember people been talking about a battle system like this.
About your character/avatar thing, I'd vote for using your character, as I always think that using yourself in a battle makes the stakes greater then a "thing" that can be summoned.
I wish you the best of luck on this, because I certainly think this isn't the easiest battle system to make.
 
Thanks man. And Yeah, I've decided that the rest of the party would be 'summoned' people called patrons (working name) and the main character is the only one that uses cards, the others are buffed and have things you can equip to them. Still sound good?
