Immigration

I'm curious, what are everyone's opinions on immigration?

This is not just limited to bah lousy governments letting all dem Poles in stealin our jobs, but the concept in general.

Personally I would like for the world to be completely free, travelling wise. I understand that our current climate does not allow for that - people own land, people rule over seperate countries - it's just not feasible. But, from an ideal world scenario I think people should have the right to travel, move, live, anywhere without restrictions.

I would also love to travel the world. Maybe not live in other countries, but I like travelling and want to explore new worlds, seek out new life and new civilisations, and boldly go where no man has gone before.

Some questions to get the ball rolling:

- Do you believe we should have the right to travel?
- Do you believe this extends to where we can live?
- What are your thoughts on immigration in your own country?

Eh, I'll be brief on this topic.

1- Sure, we should have a right to travel so long as we respect the laws of the country we're in. If we break their laws we shouldn't expect some ridiculous standard of immunity. I mean, some leverage ought to be granted in terms of laws that aren't obvious. For example, in Singapore you can't chew gum. If you're a tourist, you should probably just get off with a warning instead of the traditional fine associated with it. But for more serious violations, like vandalizing monuments, forgoing obvious cultural laws, and other crimes you should take responsibility for being an uneducated tourist and take the punishment.

2 - Eh, sure why not? Same as my above reason. If you go to another country, you should adapt to living in it and not expect it to adapt to you. So long as you follow the laws of the country go for it.

3 - My own country? (US) I don't really hold that strong of an opinion. While I'd naturally want there to be less illegal immigration, I recognize that our system is so messed up that I'm kind of apathetic to it now. As far as immigration in general is concerned, I'm perfectly fine with it. Immigration isn't the problem, unchecked population growth is. If the global population is growing at a faster rate than our resource output we have some serious problems. With that, however, checking the population calls for some intrusive means that I'm not too keen on.

But in an ideal world, that wouldn't be a concern. Then again, in an ideal world I'd also have a flying unicorn that could shoot lasers from its eyes and breathe fire. That would be awesome. Unfortunately, that world doesn't exist(yet), so I just deal with the cards I'm dealt.

Awesome Bro

Velo, it's not insulting if you actually came over here and saw how many polish people have actually immigrated into our country, and how many jobs have been lost due to them...

Okay and now onto the questions;

Yeah, obviously we should have the right to travel, although I don't think a permanent movement from one country to the other should be allowed, infact, I think a law against it should be enforced, which would work like;

If the person(s) who are migrating into their soon-to-be new home, doesn't have enough money to support themselves for the first three months of living here (Based on the average monthly support costs from the primary countries residents), then they shouldn't be allowed to enter the country.

For example, say here in the UK, the average amount it costs to support one person (Aged 21+, since anywhere under that, and you can still be classed as a student) on themselves for a full month, would be £300 (Remember, this is just an example, not meaning to be bang spot on with the values). That means that over a period of 3 months, that person would pay £900. If the person(s) wanting to migrate into the UK have less than £900 (After the exchanges), they shouldn't be allowed into the country, as they would be deemed too poor to support themselves.

I mean, people immigrate into a richer country so they're better off in their life, so they can make money and live a better lifestyle. However, what they don't understand, is that when they offer to work for less pay, they are practically stealing someone elses job, leaving that person unemployed. So let's use another example;

Bob has been working as a builder for 17 years, a polish guy named Yakutov (Lol, sounds Russian o.O) comes into the country via a lorry... and says to Bobs employer that he is able to perform the tasks of the job, and will work for only 50% of what Bob is being paid. The employer will think "Wow, that'll save me some money, okay you're hired.", Bob has been sacked and is now unemployed... He decides to go to the job center, but finds out that all of the available jobs to him (Within his skill range) have been taken by polish people, who have offered to work for less.

I think this sort of thing also leads onto Racism too, since over here atleast, quite alot of people are racist towards the polish and asians, not only because we are, as people say "being flooded by immigrants", but because they are stealing our working opportunities instead of sticking it out in their own countries. Although I think this would be best suited for a new thread, but hopefully you see what I mean.

If people get let into the country, then it's for some reason that they needed to leave their own in some way or another.

If they are good enough at their job to get it over a local (providing no external reasons are taken into account ie: religion, then taking less pay coz they from elsewhere, etc.) then more power to 'em.

I'm from Australia, and the nearest city to me is Melbourne, which i call the 'multi-cultural capital' for the one reason that out of 10 people, there's probably only 2-4 who were born here.
So i'm used to it!
