ICO-like: XP or VX?

(I swear I had posted this before, but for the life of mine I can't find the topic and my post count was back at zero.  If this turns out to be a duplicate I apologize)

Hi,

I'm new to RPG Maker and wanted to make a game with similar game play to that of ICO for PS2 (http://ps2.ign.com/objects/014/014833.html). I have two questions:

1) I often hear that XP is more powerful (and have more available resources) but also more complex. Complexity wouldn't be an issue with me, I nearly always like learning from the most complicated yet accessible example. However, unnecessary complexity is seldom a good thing to someone who is new, especially if it adds nothing to the game. Anyway, the 1st question is: Which of the two Makers is better fit to program something like ICO? I also have Game Maker, but I'd rather use RPG Maker if possible since the community is so much larger.

2) For those who have played ICO, what facets of the game could I mimic with RPG Maker and what would be impossible to implement?

Thanks in advance.

You submitted the other one twice by accident. I deleted the accidental one and then I messed up and deleted the first one too.

In answer to your question: RMXP and RMVX would both work just fine. I'm personally a fan of RMVX, although not of the RTP. The only major differences come in the default graphic styles, which can be changed.

He, I guess our two mistakes cancel each other out then and we remain flawless. 8-)

In ICO you can grab on to the hand of the "lady in distress" and drag her.  This is not exactly a caterpillar script, but shouldn't be hard to implement.

Regardless, I'm wondering whether it would be best to make the whole set-up (two people holding hands) one charset.  And if so, since one of its dimensions would double, I was wondering if I would have to make it a vehicle (or if it's just impossible and it would be wiser to just make charsets of the same characters with their arms extended).

That aspect of the game shouldn't be hard at all to implement. Personally I prefer XP - ableit I've only tried the trial for VX but the way the tile sets were arranged seemed much more restrictive without extensive customization and I figured that a system which willfully restricts creativity in this aspect can't be a better maker.
However, with regards to scripting, the systems are very similar as far as I am aware, and the event systems and databases also appear very similar. I would suggest XP personally as, seeing as you're looking for a large community, XP has a large resource and script base whilst VX has hardly been around a year (if that).

What I would suggest is you download the trials for both XP and VX, try them out and make a decision based on that because eventually its simply a matter of personal choice.

I can whole heartedly tell you that VX is the better maker in my opinion. (I know I'm gonig to get flamed for this.)

-Less ugly RTP (Seriously? The RTP for XP is good? Please.)
-More customization with easier scripting
-Easier layouts, autoshadowing
-the tileset customization is nearly perfect

etc.
