Dead Content Ice

Dead content awaiting restoration.
Ice.png

You awaken in a frozen tower, filled with statues.  You cannot remember a before, if a before ever existed; you do not know what will happen after, if you live to see that day.  You only know that you must leave this place.
Ice, when one attempts to classify it to a genre, is a free roaming puzzle game.  There can be more than one way to solve a puzzle, each solution holding it's own consequences; there is an alternate ending, for those talented enough to reach it; many areas in the tower are optional, and hold rewards in the form of plot.  There are no battles, but there is one method through which you can die.  To truly understand Ice, you'd have to play it, and moreso than that, complete it more than once (which shouldn't be much of a problem, as the game is only half an hour to an hour).  With that said, I'll now provide media in the form of screenshots, and a download to the project.
I realize I'm not providing much information in the way of story and the like, but as the game is so short in length and I really did provide anything that isn't an interpereted part of the plot, I feel this thread does it justice.

The game may be downloaded here (click).  The file is only 5 MB.  And a special thanks to Forgotten Bard for betatesting; without him I wouldn't have been able to post this up here.

I really like doing puzzles and stuff, so this game was pretty cool. However, I eventually gave up because of some glitches.
The same BGM (which sounds the same throughout) gets kind of annoying after a while

glitches:
- If the lamia chases you to one of the holes, when you exit & re-enter it will run to the right and get stuck on the plant next to the crossroads. It also gets stuck in the entrance of the ice room, which stops me from going in there or leaving if I run ahead of it.
- The green chest to the right of the king and on the lamia's path freezes the game when I open it.

I think I found a game stopping error. When I open the blue chest over by the frozen king, I'm stuck. I cant do anything whatsoever. Game just stops. Secondly, i set the bear trap on that one stop and lure the creature to it, but it doesnt hurt the creature at all.

I played through a bit of this, didn't finish the whole thing. For one reason. The creature's range of vision was WAY too big. I had to restart the game nearly 20 times just to get as far as the key template. Okay, I'm not the greatest player, obviously, but even this is still too difficult. You used a script that puts an imaginary circle of vision, right? Even getting within ten tiles behind the creature let it see me, and once it saw me, I was pretty much screwed, since it would never go away and there were very few places I could hide.

The music was nice and all but never changed. I listened to it for about ten minutes and just turned the sound off. I mean, you don't have a lot of options obviously, but at least change it up a little bit, or try a song that is a bit easier on the ears.

I really wish I could've gotten farther because the puzzles were good and this has promise, but the fact that I couldn't do anything without restarting the game every ten seconds (which made it so that I saved pretty much every step I took) put me off big time.

The title screen is pretty ugly too. If you want I could make some sort of logo for ya, shouldn't be too hard. Plain purple text on a grey screen with a tiny little sprite doesn't make for a good title screen though.

Some of these are major bugs that I am aware of; I've tried fixing them and even running them through betatesting for the input on others of solving those problems. The best I can do is put up an unencrypted version for any soul brave enough to tackle the errors. For some they don't seem to occur, however, looking at Acezon's post, which only confuses me. The creature running into the plant stops occuring if you exit the room and enter it again, for example, and it makes no sense as to why.

While I appreciate the enthusiasm, please put more thought into your posts in the future (ie less spam :x).

It's evented, actually, but yeah. Sizing down it's sight range in all directions would throw off the balancing as each room was meant to be exploited. I do, however, agree it is too difficult in some aspects, and will try to modify the sight range of the creature so it only has a tile of vision behind it. I might even put a low opacity picture around the creature to visually demonstrate it's range, but this could be difficult. I'll look into it and fix the problem as soon as I can, though I won't be online until Friday to release the modification.

It seems this is the general consensus so I'll do what I can. The best solution would likely be to cycle through multiple tracks, but that might require the help of the mighty scripting gods, heh. Not to mention finding more music fitting the atmosphere of the game. :/

Aye, I was doing a bit of multitasking with the titlescreen: keeping it legible and practical while having it kept fully evented(eventing the systems was actually a big theme of the game, but as seen above it's caused several unsolvable problems). The result could be better, I agree. I have no skill with graphic arts, and while I wouldn't request for you to try a logo for this, I'd appreciate it and add it into the game.

Think i fixed the Chest problem. It's a thing that hapenes if you request a movement that can't be made. Removing the "Wait for move's Completion" command did the trick.

I found and fixed most of the problems, but I can't get the part right
where you kill the Lich.
How did you intend it to work?

You need to place the beartrap in the icy floor room, and lure the lich to get caught in it. The lich might move over the trap without getting hurt; I believe this is more a problem with weird lag and this will happen at some times but not others.
Also, can you PM me the project with the bugs fixed that you found the solution to? Thanks!

I got that so far myself, but how
is the Lich suposed to trigger the beartrap?

Also, i don't know what PM means. If it means to upload the game, i don't know how to do that. I can tell you the solutions here, though. They're not so hard to solve.

The game stopping chests: Replace the "Wait for move's Completion" with a normal wait command. Same for the door behind the throne.
The Lich getting stuck in the Ice-room: Move the Event away from the dooropening

there is a lot of good material in this game. Could i use it for my own games?
