I ship out for basic on January 23rd...

I landed a job as a nuclear engineer for the US Navy last August, and my ship date is rapidly approaching. I quit my overnight job on December 30th to try to enjoy these last few weeks of freedom, but as anyone who's worked 70 hours a week for months on end can tell you, you forget how to enjoy yourself when you don't have the anxiety of said 70 hour work week anymore.

So, other than "Spend time with your family" (I can't stand anyone in my family, except maybe my brother, whom I talk to maybe once or twice a month), how do you guys think I can spend my last two-ish weeks of freedom? Keep in mind that I can't leave the state.

Enjoy your time at Great Lakes. I've heard that Navy BCT is rather easy, so no worries. :thumb:

EDIT: Oh, and I completely missed the purpose of this thread (was just about to move it, hehe). Umm..spend your last two weeks in any way you see fit? Maybe learn to swear like a sailor and get into the habit of walking with your hands in your pockets?

Care to tell us some of your past times? It might give some of us a fairer idea of what would be most appropriate to your situation considering the subjectivity behind it all.

I’d advise you to invest in some cheap RC toys or write some random articles for the ezine (hi Lene!), but who’s to say you would find enjoyment in that. Still, I wouldn’t mind having a fellow RC enthusiast on the forums ;)

Heh, thanks. I was actually going to be a SEAL, but they waved some money in my face and got me to be an engineer instead. Guess I dodged a bullet in more ways than one.

Can't say the same for my friends, though. One of my close friends is going to be a combat medic, while another is in some field of cryptology.

Score! I'm a pro at both of those!

You bring up a valid point.

Well, I'm a huge gamer for starters, though that's true for pretty much anyone here. I'm also a huge football nut, both playing and watching. I'm also writing a book, although I haven't had the chance to work on it in a while.

Other than that, I'm pretty much open minded to almost anything. Obviously I can't really paint a picture of who I am effectively over a message board, but I can at least narrow down the search, I suppose.

Hmmm, I wasn't aware that anyone could contribute to the Ezine. Guess I should have paid closer attention.

I guess I could get into RC toys, but I can't say that I'd get to the point where we could be fellow "RC buffs" in only two weeks.

LOL Ambience, thanks for the shout out.

How long do you usually stay wherever you're at (at sea?) ? I'd probably be inclined to write that book of yours. But as other people said, just do what you do. I'd see that brother of yours and even if you don't like the rest of their family (don't kill me!), I'd at least say/write a tiny something. (Sorry, I'm a hopeless family girl, even though my own family is pissing me off like hell). They do know you're leaving right?

Well it's a mere two months for basic training, then I go to "school" (which for my profession will be at least 18 months, compared to the 8 weeks my friends got @_@ ), then I go on a carrier (or sub, if I elect to). I've heard that carrier duty is 6 months on / 6 months off, but we all know how honest they've been lately with their return dates.

Yes, I would like to work on that book, if I can get back into the groove I was in prior to August.

Unfortunately, I don't remember what I used to do to keep my days full before work. Every time I try to think about what I want to do during the coming night, I start getting "flashbacks" of "ZOMG *insert work related duty here*". Hence my turning to rmxp.org for answers (the only place I look for answers :thumb: )

I do plan on visiting my brother once more before I ship, although I might end up passing on that. I bought him a 360 for his birthday back in August, so that should keep him happy.

Unfortunately, my family did somehow find out that I joined, so now I have to put up with their faux pride. I keep telling them that my brother needs some support, because he's entering the police academy, but my father disowned him not long ago, so now I'm stuck having to actually talk with them once in a while.

Eh, at least I'll be moving around the world on a regular basis, so there's a chance they won't find me.

Well then, I suggest you buy yourself some tickets to watch a game with some mates. Bring your PSP along with you as well for halftime. After the game, head on over to the local pub to get pissed, then afterwards whip out a notepad and let your creativity fly (I hear getting drunk is the best way to bring out the artist).

...I think that about covers it.

Run to Cocoa Beach, swim to Daytona, run home, puke, eat, sleep for 30 minutes, then do it all again.
When you get done, be thankful you chose nuke over seals.

Heh, that's a solid plan, although I don't know where I can find any football games that are being played in the state of Florida that haven't already sold out. That and I can't go to a bar at my age (which doesn't stop me from drinking at home :D).

Still, way to cover all the bases. I must make this a reality, post-haste!

That might be more accurate than you think. I do intend on getting into super-mega-awesome shape so that I can play football, and doing a regimen that will probably kill me seems like just the way to do this.

Thanks to everyone for the responses so far in this topic.
