I Just Cannot Make A World Map

I like my games to basically show your where you have to go on the World Maps as one of my biggest pet peeves is running around a world map finding the town/cave/etc that I have to go to.  But everytime I try to make it pretty straightforward it never works.

I also end up making my world maps so small and giving very little room between towns, it doesn't look good.  Is there any tips I can get to help my world mapping?

(BTW I'm using the VX Worldmap Tileset, if that helps).

Yeah, sketch it on paper. Also, have islands with quite large (not too large lols) bits of sea in between them, so that if you need to move some part of the map, like extend the time it takes to get to a town, you can do it quite easily.

The day I got VX I started with the world map tileset and was actually quite amazed at what I got.  The map is over 100X100 tiles, and once you get past the fact that the mountains are supposed to look weird like that and that everything has square edges, it is actually a great tileset.

I dont really want to post a pic of the map (secret ^_^) but I might be able to help you map it...

First, paint the entire thing the deep ocean.  Then use the CIRCLE tool to make lighter parts of the ocean (small boats can go on that, large ships go on the deep part)  Make it not circuliar...  then add the grass tiles in it.  make several islands, and then start editing each island individually.  the northern edge ones should have ice and snow, the southern ones should have sand and palm trees... etc...  Then add the trees, mountains, and then the towns.

That is what I did, and it was amazind what I came up with.
