Hype: Are over-hyped games good?

Hype: Are over-hyped games good?

We all know that the gaming world has seen some over-hyped games. Over-hyped games are games that look really great and you just can't wait to get it, but when you do- IT SUCKS! Here is my little collection of some over-hyped games of late. Feel free to post yours here as well.

Hype Scale:
:please: -Not worth the hype - HORRIBLE!
O_o -Not as expected - BAD!
:| -Promising features were bleh - GOOD!
:-/ -Some problems - GREAT!
 -WHOOO! This game is so worth the hype! - AWESOME!
:thumb: -Speechless...a true hyped game that is well over expectations - PERFECT!

Trial One - Gameplay Hype

Games are driven by many factors, Gameplay being a very important factor. When a tech demo or gameplay movie is released we want to see something new and cool.

Final Fantasy X-2
Final Fantasy X was not the greatest Final Fantasy title, but it was a new generation and a face of the FF era. When the sequel was to come about everyone was excited. The game came out and wouldn't you know- it was bad. Square tried to give it some new features and a some-what new battle-system. It didn't cut it. The game was very boring and only using three girls left some die-hard FF fans wanting some more testosterone!

The gameplay seemed like a breath of fresh air, but it just wasn't any better. The game had a nice system using dresses and yahdayahda, but it was stale.

HYPE RATING::|

Trial Two - Graphics

If you are true gamer graphics are not your main concern. However, when a game is hyped for amazing graphics and graphic performance, you are expecting just that.

Because everyone has different opinions on this, I want to here what you all think!

I have a bunch more games and trials to add, so stay tuned! Sorry for it being so brief, I had to cut it short for time!

Let's here those opinions!

Fable: The Lost Chapters: :-/

Fable has to be THE textbook example of overhyping in the videogame industry. It's really a pity that Lionhead wasn't able to meet the huge expectations that they set for themselves.

HOWEVER, the introduction of The Lost Chapters helped to save the game to a certain extent. With the introduction of a good hour or two of great new quests, some neat items and skills, and some other secrets and such, this expansion was well worth the wait. If you happen to see it cheap anywhere (for $20 or under, which you probably can if you buy the X-box version), I highly suggest getting it.

"Hype" is really in the eyes of the beholder. Everyone says Fable was overhyped; I didn't think so because I don't look for articles pertaining to certain games. I heard about Fable maybe once every 6 months, but overall I never felt like the game was going to be this second coming of Christ so I enjoyed the game a lot more because my expectations weren't so friggin high.

As far as hype in MY EYES goes:

Playstation 2:http://www.rmxp.org/forums/images/smilies/RTPSet/straight.gif[/img]

I was dearly expecting the PS2 ever since they showed off The Bouncer tech demo and Final Fantasy VIII's dance scene being rendered in real time. In the end, it turns out The Bouncer sucked balls and the PS2's launch lineup was terrible with only 500,000 consoles to satiate the 270 million Americans and the only great titles were Kessen, Timesplitters, Tekken, and Dead or Alive 2 (although I must admit that I enjoyed Summoner).

While the PS2 has recieved some overall AAA titles, for the most part every promise Sony has made crashed and burned. Xbox Live whipped the shit out of Sony's online service, the harddrive was only compatible with like... 2 games (RPG Maker 2 and Final Fantasy 11), the USB ports had nearly no accessories to use, and the disc drives of the early models crapped out on 90% of the people who stood in line for hours buying one on launch date (I.E. ME).

The backwards compatibility was great and all, but even then the games on the system got off to a rocky start. 5 years later and all the PS2 has to show for itself are generic jRPG's and a few rare gems that aren't even in distribution anymore. I can't even find half the games I own on the PS2 in any used game lot; the only games that are still even in manufacturing are (ironically) bad ones.

Still, tens of millions of people disagreed with the Microsoft and Nintendo this generation so the PS2 still came on top and Ico and Shadow of the Colossus stood out above the rest so I must say "Bravo, Sony! Atleast someone in SCEA knows how to make a good game!"

Now then, Graphics:

Gears of War:http://www.rmxp.org/forums/images/smilies/RTPSet/thumbsup.gif[/img]

If you say Gears of War isn't a pretty game you're either half-blind, an idiot, or a Sony fanboy/Microsoft hater (probably both). Gears of War promised to the world that it would deliver a stunning, cinematic game. While the writing was crap, they certainly delivered on the visual appeal. Vast, massive battlefields with hi-definition, detailed textures littered the game. Bullets didn't cause small holes, they literally ripped the world to shreds spreading dust and debris in the faces of your enemies. Monsters were large and imposing and moved with a graceful fluidity and perfect animation. No other game currently on the market has yet topped Gears' shear size and scale even though it was a linear game!

Let alone the fact that Gears was a FUN game, the graphics and gameplay were (for once) equally matched creating a very surprising (albeit unfortunately short) hit that has generously added to sales of the Xbox 360. Hopefully more developers will get it through their heads that gameplay has to be just as good as Graphics.

This is complete subjective bullshit.

I personally thought that FFX-2 was not over hyped, and was a great game. Does that mean your point is invalid or mine? Of course, neither. So why even discuss it?

This post recieves an B+ for Bullshit+.

Also, Gears of War although graphically astonishing, brought absolutely nothing new to the FPS Genre, in fact, it was even stated by one of the leading developers. How can it be considered a game with equal graphics:gameplay if all it does is the exact same things that every other FPS does, with prettier graphics?

Because Gears of War isn't an FPS.

But I'll add something useful to this post by saying:

1: Did you even play Gears of War because if you have I will bet my money that you would be whistling a different tune.

and

2: It does what it does RIGHT. There is no such thing as a new idea; it's all been done before in some kind of form. Every once in a while a game comes out that presents a common idea in a new way; Resident Evil 4 comes to mind. RE4 was just a 3rd person action game minus the straffing but it featured difficult enemies and exciting gameplay. Half-Life 2 offers NOTHING new to the FPS genre except "LOL GRAVITY GUN" but the game was incredibly well polished and featured a well paced story and good level design.

Videogames are about the gameplay, right? I rather play "Generic Action Game Done Right" then "New Original Action Game That Plays Like Shit." The shit-game might be new and never-seen-before but atleast I know I'll have more fun playing the Generic Action Game. I don't know about you, but I don't spend $60 on garbage no matter how many times the developer has decided to attach the buzzword "unique" onto it.

EDIT: Man, I'm sounding really rude today.

Sorry, I don't mean to be rude: I'm just in a sour mood because it's really hot and I have no AC.
