[Howto] Run RPG Maker on a Mac

Yes, it actually is possible. I've accomplished this about 5 minutes ago. And it's really easy too.
I used to use Parallels to use RMXP, but that really slowed down my Mac. It usually had 90% CPU in use. Now I have 90% CPU NOT used. For the major part of this tutorial, I will use RMXP.

  1. You will need to download Crossover (it's not free though (or is it?)).
  2. When you got it, download the regular RMXP installation package (the one with the SetupMenu.exe). I believe it's RMXP 1.02.
  3. Fire up Crossover, go to Configure -> Install Software.
  4. Pick "Other Application" (just enter it in the search box).
  5. Select an installer, this needs to be the SetupMenu.exe.
  6. Pick a new Windows XP bottle and name it.
  7. Install both RMXP and the RTP. Remember to ALWAYS pick the checkboxes saying "Create a start menu item" and "Create a desktop icon". Else it won't appear in the Crossover Programs list.
  8. Close the setup menu
  9. Now, RMXP is installed, try to open it. You will notice that it's really screwed up. Either everything on the map is yellow, or heavily distorted.
  10. Close RMXP.
  11. Go to Configure -> Manage Bottles. Pick the bottle containing RMXP on the left, and click "Control Panel" on the right.
  12. Open up Wine Configuration.
  13. Go to the tab saying "Graphics".
  14. Pick the fourth checkbox (Emulate a virtual desktop)

Now, since RMXP requires at least 1024 x 768, I figured it might work to put that in the boxes. And it actually did. A few things are still cut off, so I drove it up to 1050 x 800. I tried 1440 x 900 (default resolution for OS X), but that didn't make it work.
Anyways, I've played around a bit to see what the maximum possible resolution is. It's 1320 x 900 for VX and 1310 x 900 for XP. RM2k3 seems to not be affected by this graphics glitch.
So that's the resolution you put in there. Click OK and restart RMXP. Now it's all working.

Note: You might notice the map list is a bit screwed up (a lot of white space above the project's name), just maximize RMXP and it's gone.

Note2: For RM2k3, you need to run a batch file. You do this by going to Programs and click "Run Command". Enter the path to the file. The bottles are in this location: /Users/{user}/Library/Application Support/CrossOver/Bottles. From there, just navigate to the desktop (/drive_c/users/crossover/Desktop). Drag the file to the Command box (don't forget to pick the RM2k3 bottle!) and surround it by quotation marks (""). Click run and wait about a minute. Then close the Run Command window.

Resolutions:
RM2k3 - I prefer 1440 x 800, so the dock doesn't accidentally pop up when editing the map at the very bottom.
RMXP - 1310 x 900
RMVX - 1320 - 900

If I missed anything, or if I've been unclear about something: tell me.
