How to Develop a Role-Playing Game for PC (The Guide!)

Hello HBGames community!

You may have seen me make an odd post now and again (surveys, interviews etc.) to get information from you about RPG development. All of that information has finally been compiled to create a guide on how to make your own RPG! The guide focuses on introducing people to the various aspects of RPG development, as well as giving them information on various ways you can go about creating your game.

Although the guide is designed for amateurs, experienced game developers may learn something new as well!

You can read the PDF here:

Give it a quick read and let me know what you think!

Your guide was more focused on tools and didn't really cover any development processes.
Q: How do I write a book?
A: With pen and paper ~Make sure it has a cover.

You started off good with practical advice. Keep it simple. Forget online play. Mapping out pitfalls for beginners who can't see the path ahead of them.

Plan the Story- You used "points on a map" structure method, but there is also discover writing, the snowflake method, try/fail, 3-acts, cat and mouse, and roll the dice that can be used as story structure. You briefly mention player choices, but you could go into more detail on how writing a game is different from other mediums. Serial vs episodic format. Genres.

Graphics and sound- You didn't go into any design elements or list useful software. Just take your pick of these resource sites and make sure it's consistent so it looks and sounds good together. You could at least cover the types of resources they need. Or explain what you meant by consistency and immersion. You can assume they've play 1 or 2 games before. Examples of bad design and inconsistent graphics would be more helpful than a screenshot of Mario that everyone has seen before.

I don't want to discourage you from writing articles because it's a good way to learn for yourself. I've been attempting to write articles for the ezine and forums but I really have to ask myself if what I'm writing is really informative or if my ideas are conclusions people could arrive to on their own.

This isn't my best work, as I was limited to 2000 words when writing this. I couldn't cover as much information as I would have liked to due to the word limit.

Thank you for the suggestions, I will look over it again and see if I can't include some of the things you mentioned!
