How do you get a HUD to work?

Hey, uh, I was kinda wondering on how to get a Heads Up Display to work right. I've never made one before, and I'm worried that if I do make one, my character's health or magic bars won't go down. Anyone think they can help me out?

Are you using RGSS or events? I'll assume events since this is in general support... it's a bit hard to do with events, you'll either need to make a couple hundred energy different sprites or make the bars slide out of screen or so.
