That would throw you off work because you'd be looking for a "date"... and unless you're doing a course so great that you feel the need to celebrate, why celebrate.
I'll this is one of the few things that I can generalise about anyways)
I (being in England) have had two dances and my school prom (Which I loved :D), The first two were when I was 12 and 13, looking back they were total shite and just barely scrapped being called dances BUT(big but) What I learned was that getting dates and school proms/homecoming (whatever the fuck it's called) are way overrated. If you're gonna go don't get a date unless it's a girl you know and have based (meaning set a foundation for a relationship) with, if it's a girl you've never talked too then school homecoming is not the place to start a relationship with them, if anything ask them out after and start from square one rather than skipping to ten... second if you do go with a girl you know and have based with (which I doubt because you're a freshman but I don't understand the American system so...) then this will still be a way overblown date, unless thorugh some miracle you already have a girlfriend that you've been going out with for a month plus in which case you can you can take her otherwise it will be too much too early like I just said.
When you get there dance with every girl you know (in your year) because you didn't come there to be stuck with one girl/your date, you may have taken her as your date but the point of a rav- sorry "homecoming" is to make friends and get to know everyone trust me all the other bullshit they say is unconnected, do you actually see any one coming home? Also I think all the bullshit cliché stuff connected with dances is well bullshit, you don't do anything the date after (although I could have, she was planning to rent out a room in a hotel and 7 girls plus me and a few other boys were gonna stay... and after I heard what happened they all got pissed and we were stuck at some boys house because of someones over protective parents... whatever enough about my flopped after prom escapade). How old are you? Unless you're like 20 the chances of doing something with a girl after jusy meeting them is very close to zero unless (she "easy", she's drunk and you're sick enough to take advantage or she's in some over state were she can't defend herself bar sleep) even after twenty you're gonna have to drop some serious game to get that far easily. The most you'll get after a dance is a kiss, lipsing (=french kiss (the stupidest word ever made I'm sure that french people weren't the first to kiss like that)) or if you're very lucky *** *** (which I won't go into to protect your sensetive mind). You should expect a hug at most because if you move in for a kiss and get air (serious air) then your high school life has just crashed down around you (I actually planned to go to America just so I could experience the way they do things (and with my british accent draw some noice girls B-)) actually I'm going America in October and I intend to enjoy it, I should open a thread asking were to go, I'm sure all the fine American people here would love to help me out :D, anyways) actually scrap what I just said, don't expect anything after, if she wants to give you anything don't force yourself on her she'll move to you.
Also you shouldn't hype too much about this "homecoming" because at the end of the day it's just a dance, you'll go dance (hopefully) go home sleep (by yourself without a doubt) and then go to school the next day or if it's on friday/saturday/sunday then monday. You should try not to draw too much attention to yourself also there will be 1/2/3 years to get to know most people don't rush now. I suggest you avoid older girls/boys even if you d know"a ton" of sophmore they will be more interested in seniors and fellow sophmores than a "freshman" that's the circle of life in school (actually I based with two older girls but they were ugly as hell  I'm so evil), I'm sure that all the girls in your year don't look like something you'd wipe off your shoe (Yep so evil), so focus on them more than anyone else BUT if you happen to see a sophmore you know alone then by all means talk to them, if they brush you off then sly it out and walk to the nearest table .
Lastly you should wear something half decent (don't come in a suit from Asda :lol your clothes/shoes/accesories (what's that boys don't wear accesories tch! Typical then what are hat's, ear studs man bags that seem to have grasped England by storm, anyways) should all match becaus if you come in green shoes, brown trousers, blue shirt and orange blazer it will look just as bad as that suit from Asda. Try to get matching accesories as well and DON'T wear a hat it looks soooo tacky. Go for the mature sophisticated look, it impresses the ladies much more than the kiddish still grasping to my childhood look.
On a very last note, the most important thing is to enjoy yourself (NO!) yes, if you go there and have the shittest time in your life then you won't enjoy your next time or the one after. And try to act yourself best to be real and loved than fake and loved.
My advice (What' that you say advice, advice that was a fucking essay) take it or leave it, I think you'll leave it personally especially if you're not in the mood to read a long stretch of text and because I'm british so all I know about is fox hunting and crumpets XD:lol:XD:DXD I love crumpets btw)
Hope you have a great *cringes* "homecoming"
EDIT: It took me thirty+ minutes to write this XD
