HK sprite WIP: Arabian hero

Joy

Alright, toying with using HK for my adventure project as well as ASW, took some down time to try out the hero on the template. I don''t like the white palette on it, so I'm trying to rework that especially. I also redid the face to be less cutsey and so I can animate expressions better. Please give me any input you can.

Without further ado I give you Salid Ibn Moussad Al Quori!

Thanks for looking!

Ohhh, this is HOT. One of the most beautiful Hks I've ever seen (besides Showkaizers) Keep up the good work! From what I can see, it doesn't look like your pillowshading, so I've no complaints!

Oh. My. (Please excuse the drooling.)

Pleeeeeease tell me you're turning that edited face in to the HKCP... (And yes, I've just realized I'm spending more time nabbing other people's HKCP stuff rather than making my own.)

Anyway, I love it, want to see more!

The shading under his arms is a little too heavy and the right side of his body needs a little shading.  His scabbard should cast a shadow as well.  Besides that, he looks excellent.  The design is definitely top-notch and the details are great.

I like this very much. I think that personally the sides of the overcoat/whatever could do with a little more, shading, but that's just my opinion. Also, the strings on the neck area seem a little strange to me. Maybe if a pixel or two were added somewhere in between?

All in all, an excellent HK sprite, though.
Have you thought about doing some stuff for the HKCP?

Hey great work on this. Seems more and more talented spriters are beginning to come out of the woodwork. Let's see a finished characterset!

Eee, so glad you guys like him ^^.

Britchick: I'm considering it, but gotta do the sideviews first

Nphyx: Ahh, see, this is why I submit stuff here. I always get so excited about getting the last accessory done I never remember to go back and shade the layers under them! And I'll try lightening those armpits.

Gratheo: Yeah, I'll see about re-evaluating the 'skirt' portion (it's a long robe) when I add the shading from the scarves and scabbard belt. Those ties are giving me so much trouble, I may either omit them or try widening the V a bit so you can see the lacing in it. And I have another thread where I'm doing some HKCP stuff, so yes!

Yay! thanks for all the imput! I'm gonna do those things and post a progress.

EDIT:

Okay, tried some things, look better now?

It's a little better, yeah.
Now that I look closer at it, I can see an extra shade that was pretty much hidden before.
It's the lightest one after the fill. I'd recommend darkening it just a touch, in order to help make it more visible.
And, iceplosion? What's so horrible about the name? Seems fairly typical of an Arabic man to me. Although I'd change the 'Quori' part to something a little more realistic, as that's a fairly uncommon name. Here's a source that may come in handy for other character names in your game, too.

Yes the name is typical of an arabic man but its not very memorable.
Abu Karim Muhammad al-Jamil ibn Nidal ibn Abdulaziz al-Filistini (which means "Father-of-Karim, Muhammad, the beautiful, son of Nidal, son of Abdulaziz, the Palestinian") is also a typical name now how many people playing the game will be able to remember that? How could it fit in the menu?

Well, the idea is to do the standard given name in most conversations and menus, so Salid (Sahl-eed). The full name would only be used in very proper situations such as meeting government officials, employers, the head of the university, ect ect.

Wow, I love him! I love his face, too. What I'm really digging about HK's recently is that their faces are large enough to make them really varied.

The white palette's contrast is still a liiittle low, particularly on the outlines, in comparison to the other color ranges, but I'm loving this thoroughly :D :thumb:

it blows my mind to consider the idea of a culture that likes to keep its whole family tree in its name :D  I mean, I know my ancestors did the same thing but we were way, way too lazy to hang on to that tradition for so long.

Anyway, the edit looks great, I think there's a marked improvement on the shading.

Although, if he's Arabian, shouldn't his shirt be dulled down a little? Something that white out in that bright of a sun would blind the person wearing it, not to mention everybody around him. Maybe I'm just being stupid. By the way, I really like his hair... and the sketch. Did you do that yourself?

Well, the point of wearing bright white in the middle east is that it reflects both light and heat and makes the wearer cooler in the arid climate.

And yes, I did the character sketches.
