Once, long ago, I bought Hitman 2 for Xbox on the cheap from Gamestop, played for maybe an hour, beat the first level, and promptly put it down in disgust. I assumed I just wasn't any good at the game, but regardless I didn't enjoy it in the least.
Months laters I bought Hitman 3 (for PC) on a whim, using a handfull of cash I shamefully felt I had nothing else to spend on. I had seen a video of it from IGN or someplace and thought it looked fun - I had in fact forgotten about Hitman 2.
I enjoyed Hitman 3 thoroughly. The mechanics almost all seemed spot on, the levels were gloriously non-linear with dozens of ways to complete any given objective, along with smooth graphics, a fairly interesting storyline (although not really tied in to most of the missions) and a seemingly endless replay value. (I played through a couple levels more than 3 times just to try different things out.)
I thought to myself, "Maybe now I will get Hitman 2!" So I fired it up and played it again, coming to one simple conclusion.
Hitman 2 is a horrible game, and the mechanics are - put simply - broken. Ugly, buggy, broken.
Hitman 3 gets an easy 9/10 in my book.
How could two games that are so similar be so different? I don't know.
