Welcome to HBGames, a leading amateur game development forum and Discord server. All are welcome, and amongst our ranks you will find experts in their field from all aspects of video game design and development.

Hello

Greetings. Name's kilik. I just picked up RPG Maker in the hopes of using it to complete my Fire Emblem fangame. Had some issues with Game Maker. I find game design to be very fun; in fact, I intend to pursue it as a career. Like I said before, I know nothing of RPG Maker, but I hope that I will be albe to finish my game with the help of this forum.

Welcome to rmxp.org, Kilik 64! We're glad to have you here, but unfortunately, we know nothing about you! Go ahead, and read the rules, and fix up your post, so we know what kind of guy is joining us!

(Not really. Ike may be slow, but Mr. Game and Watch's defensive game is awful. His shield is small, and he's so light that you can knock him away with ludicrous ease. He comes with a lot of good smash attacks, but they're really no good if you're flying around too often to land a solid blow.)

Welcome to .Org, Kilik! Man, it seems like everyone I see here is looking toward game design as a career. I can't imagine that it'd be a very easy industry to break into at this point, what with the incredibly number of prospective game designers waiting there in the wings. Of course, I should really expect that a lot of people on a game development forum would want to develop games, of all things, as a professional career. : P

So, yeah. Have fun, read the rules, and watch out for chimeras. I hear they're everywhere all of a sudden.

Family ties are always less reliable than solid achievement, though. Even if your fingers are made out of gold, the company will not hire you over someone more qualified just because one face out of their multitudes of workers happens to be related to you.

So what I'm saying is you gotta make sure you don't use that pillow as a crutch. It's thinner than it looks, so you gotta make sure you can make it on your own. Still, it's nice to have someone who can make the introduction for you.

Oh, of course not. He's not my ticket into the business or anything. It's just nice to have someone who can get me info from actual game designers that he sees on a daily basis. And of course, accidentally drop a copy of my fangame on this boss' desk.

Welcome Kilik.

Just my opinion but you might not want to go with a fangame, there was a member of another RPG Maker community (actually she is in lots of other RPG Maker communities) who was asked to work in professional game development and it was because of her own completely original game.

I think an original game might make more of an impact than a fangame, even if you use the fire emblem formula you could make it original and that would look much better.

Anyway good luck with your game development!

Welcome Kilik!

Aveyond? Completely original?

Er, wait, you are referring to Aveyond, right? :x

(Amanda Fae got enough money to allow her to develop games for a living, but I don't think she was hired by any professional companies.)

Skill with RPG Maker doesn't really translate into most aspects of actual game development. Maybe sprite creation and music composition could carry over into the big commercial circuit, but it's not like professional games are made with a Ruby editor that does most of the work for you.

So that game had better be

A. Mostly editor-independent
or
B. Damn good with compelling dialogue and excellent original music and sprites
if you want it to be much of a leverage piece in your job hunt. It's not like you'll be put in charge of your own team of interns who'll code for you right off the bat.

Actually I'm talking about ccoa. I guess you didn't know since she doesn't post here anymore but she got an opportunity to work in game development and needs to work full time on Shades (her original game) now.
Although it was Amanda Fae (From Amaranth games) who got her the opportunity.

So like I said Kilik, you'll have better luck with an original game.

Welcome to .org.  :thumb:

Yeah, I think you'll have better luck with an original game. Besides, I don't think making a commercial fangame is even legal (I think). You'll have to get Diegoale to explain it to you, he pretty much knows all the laws concerned with making a commercial game. ='D

Either way, original games are always better. I mean, you get a lot more freedom and you can do stuff your way. It's all your choice, though.

Enjoy yourself on .org.

Actually I know this stuff too since I'm a paralegal
However to put it simply (and so I don't have to type fifty-something paragraphs) you would be violating copyright and intellectual property laws. (then by sending it to a company you would be giving evidence to someone who would take copyright violation very seriously)

It's a bad idea because besides breaking the law (and if you were charged you would face a financial penalty) it would certainly not make a good impression on a game company.
Show the your creativity and do something original!  :thumb:
