Hello, new here. :)

Hello, I'm kind of new here I guess. Not new to the web. I guess I can post my strengths/weaknesses when it comes to RPG Making. My strengths? Hmm, I guess I can be pretty creative when I'm inspired, and I like to focus on originality above all. I also have experience in terms of scripting and programming, and like to expand my experiences by delving into other subject matters (such as sprite making and stuff). I can definitely draw quite well actually (though only physically; my making-stuff-on-computer skills is rather limited).

Those are pretty much my strengths. My weaknesses? I like to expand experiences a tad bit too much actually, and end being to scatter brained. =( It appears that for that reason I tend to dream a lot but never actually do anything. I like drawing, I like writing, I like science and math (and programming too), and I'm getting into music... thus, that's the problem sometimes. I just like doing all sorts of things that one moment I say, "I'm going to do this" then the next, I see something new and I say "Ok, I'll put this on hold, as I start doing that". It can be frustrating...

But, I'm hoping that by trying to dedicate myself somewhere I can get over that flaw. The most enjoyable part about making a game, is that it's all yours and you can put together everything you know to make it. Which works well for me since I've had pretty good experience in most areas (specifically programming and writing; not so much computer art and music, but I'll manage).

As for prior experience... well, a while ago, like 6 years ago, I think, I was planning on making a game (since I was like 12 years old xD but I had javascript programming experience so, once again, programming didn't come impossible to me). I never really did finish that game though. I downloaded RPG Toolkit. It was going to be about Digimon xD. Though, my tastes have changed and I want to make something different.

Don't expect me to pop up too frequently, I suppose, I don't really want to stay and chitchat these days. Though, do expect me to ask questions, mainly on the scripting board as I get adjusted to Ruby programming (it's rather easy and simple, I tried out Java once for a while, and tend to understand most of Ruby but still trying to get adjusted kind of I guess). Right now, I'm mainly focusing on a battle system that should be real-time and is KH:CoM like (Side-view real-time battling). I have most of the details figured out, so it should create for a unique battle system. I just need to make it happen.

I think I'll first make a fighting game I guess, to practice mainly, and then move on to the RPG Making.

So, yeah, that's pretty much my introduction, I guess. So, hi and hopefully I'll manage to at least finish something. ^_^

sup, man. it's kind of cool to see someone who's messed around with making RPGs before -- a lot of newguys here are just starting out with their concepts and such. it's gonna be interesting to see what you come up with.

also, good luck with Ruby. we have some pretty solid scripters around here, actually, so getting support shouldn't be a big problem.

I completely agree with the whole making your own game aspect, everything being your own. That's why I think it's odd that so many people request resources or use other people's scripts. I think it's just... nice, and fills you with pride, to see something you made entirely yourself working. That said, I myself am rubbish at music and graphics too. :)

Welcome to the site, hope you enjoy yourself.

Because you have to decide to make either something that's going to lack in quality in some areas or draft in "specialists". There's enough to making an adventure game without having to create a soundtrack and learn to code. I'm still completely accomplished that I designed and created the overall game, put in 95% of the time compared to everyone else.

It's probably why most rm games suck... people make a list like graphics, scripts etc instead of level design, character design, system implementation etc. I can understand why people want to do it themselves but I'm sure Hideo Kojima feels good enough despite not personally creating the wire frames for Snake.

I don't know why I'm going off on one in an intro thread. Hello...

Heya! Good to have you here. And it's also nice to see someone putting some effort into their introductions! :D

Nice to see someone who's messed around in game making before. Can't wait to see some of your stuff!

I feel the same way alot, there's just so much to learn and it's hard to focus on just one thing. Hopefully you can find your niche and see what you really excel at here. I started out the same way and found out I was best at the conceptual development of a game, so it'll be cool to see some of your stuff.

Lol, well thanks for the hellos I guess. =)

Umm, update? Well, for my niche, I can definitely see how it'll probably be scripting. Maybe art. Though definitely not music. x_x I'll probably have to ask for people to help me there. Though I am planning to take some classes in college to get better at, well, being musical xD

Yeah, so about that update... these past couple of days, I haven't really even bothered much looking into the whole Event/Common Event/Layering thing. I mean, I kind of just understood them immediately, and I guess I did see a couple of youtube videos. Mainly, though, these days, I've just jumped directly into the script. I managed to figure out how to make the character jump, which awesome. =) So, now every time you hold space, c or enter, and move in any of the 8 directions, you jump in that direction.

It's pretty easy I suppose. Though, it still took me a while to figure out I guess. x_x It is a lot of code. I think I know how to go about making the fighting game. Basically, change the graphics so that they are side-view, then make a panorama for a background, and make tiles that are side-view based too.

With that, you at least have some sort of base I suppose. I still need to figure out how to change the graphics so that when it jumps it displays a jumping graphic rather than hopping (and need to figure out how the outside-battle animations work in general; how they're put together). >_< A well, I'll just have to look into that.

Anyhow, yeah, thanks for the replies... and I guess from this point on, I might just start a topic in the concept development section for this (as opposed to posting here, gotta allow others to introduce themselves too, hah x) ). =)

Phew, after much thought, I figured it out =)
