Welcome to HBGames, a leading amateur game development forum and Discord server. All are welcome, and amongst our ranks you will find experts in their field from all aspects of video game design and development.

Hello Everyone, Greenhorn here

What is your history with game creation and the game making community?

I'm new here.

What is your field of expertise in game making?

No expertise. My interest in creating my own games started when I decided to Mod a PC game called Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. Of course, then my life fell apart for a bit and I never finished it. But it's functional for a 3rd of what I planned on doing with it. Still personal though, I've never put it out there for other people. Now I'm in the position to restart work on the mod again OR move on for a bit and start learning how to create my own games and see my own ideas work. I decided on the latter.

How did you find the forums?

While searching google for programs to use to create my own games.

What you hope to get out of the forum?

I will be self teaching coding. C, C++, Ruby if I decide I like RPG maker that much, and I'm hoping the community will recommend other skills to have to get the job done. Book suggestions for learning code would be great too. I may also need help if I'm failing to understand a concept of coding. But I'll try to teach myself mostly and not bug people here too much unless I'm really struggling. When I am able to produce something playable I'm hoping to get the same type of critique I see all over this forum. I try to be friendly, even when I'm anonymous, so maybe I can make some friends here too.

What kind of creative talents do you have (outside of game creation)?

You may not know from my forum posts but when I'm really at peace I can produce some pretty good writing. I try to draw, although I'm not very good at it.

What are your hobbies or interests?

I'm obsessed with floating (intertubing). The new season starts very soon, sometimes the crew starts as early as May. We've scouted a whole new route this year so I'm really looking forward to it. And of course I play way too many video games. I enjoy microbreweries and wineries and just spending time with my good friends.

What kind of music do you listen to?

Mostly electronic and some genre blurring stuff anymore. I like various forms of Rock but the genre kind of died for me back in the 90s unfortunately. I like some modern composers such as Howard Shore, J.G Thirwell and Trevor Jones.

What level of education are you in? What are you studying in college?

I'm not in college, I'm working.

Greetings.

I really like the Ruby language, and indeed got into it from my experiences with RPG Maker XP. For books, I got a lot out of Beginning Ruby by Peter Cooper. It covers a lot of ground and while not all the issues it talks about are relevant to game design, it's pretty straightforward... I found it much easier than trying to learn Ruby coding from web sites alone.

I also liked Tyler Church's Man With Code site, which specifically deals with game design and is aimed at complete Ruby beginners (that site is video, but there's also a text version somewhere). If you haven't yet broken into scripting/coding, his explanations of scenes, how to create menus and objects, and so on is very enlightening. Unfortunately, he eventually quit his series, but what he did put up is great.

As for coding questions, you can post yours on this forum, and (at least if it's Ruby/RMXP related) I'll try to answer as best I can.

Hello again all,

Thank you for the greetings and book suggestions. Tomas, do you make your music with a computer program? I liked the one you added most recently the best called 'Rocket Science'. It gave me an awesome in orbit around Jupiter feeling. If that didn't make sense, clarified, that's a good thing.
