Idea

This is an idea I got last week, and since then I've just been thinking of silly ideas for a story and such... from today I've now got Potion and Melanii on board with me to help make this thing a reality, which personally I think could be a really fun thing to do.

The idea is that we're going to try and include as many members as characters as we can, I've already started a list, but right now I'm keeping it under wraps, I don't want people to feel like they're being left out and won't be part of the game... I will tell you that right now there are 21 members with their own character descriptions, some a little wacky, some serious, it's just based on how we see them as members of the community and their history with the forum, don't worry, there's nothing bad... ish, lol.

---

Progress

At the moment, this thing is still at square one, we're thinking of ways to integrate members into the story, what the story itself will actually entail after the initial introduction. We've already got an idea for an introduction that will be used as a catalyst towards the story... it's a simple A to B story but we're going to fill it with sub plots and stuff to make the game as awesome as possible!

As soon as adequate resources, by that I mean story progress and character development, are created, I'll start work on making the first few scenes of the game and maybe release a screenshot or two for you to check out... I won't be naming characters, so you'll have to guess who is who for the time being.

We're also discussing whether or not to make it linear, which is better for the story, or open world, which would be better for accommodating a larger number of members into the game and add the element of exploration, but I think we've come up with a solution which will keep everyone happy:

It's going to be an open world, but story quests are going to be instance based, it'll really help with developing quests, and keep things a lot more organised on my part, yay!

...hunh. I think this is the first time I've seen someone attempt to make a community game here.

It's worked well on other sites, like RMRK, so it would be interesting to see what you guys come up with.

I'm going to jump in and say; It should be done like The Nameless Mod.

So it's a game that takes place in a world that reflects the forums and the community, so the local newspaper would be called "ezine" and bulletin posts would literally be that, the forums would take place in a giant building like a meeting hall and the player gets PMs sent directly to them.

From there you could probably make up a story about a retired moderator of the forums investigating a new wave of users who have started to appear in the city, the city of-course being a dystopian cyberpunk style as it is no longer the thriving trade-city at the centre of it's network that it once was.

The government changed hands several times and there have been political wars, but the new prime-minister is rebuilding the city slowly with the outlook of peace, but the peace is getting disturbed by the new users that have started migrating into the city under the guise of economic reasons, but in truth they are trying to sap out the Resource mines under the city and export the Rubies and Sprites.

You can build a pretty crazy and funny story from all that. It would, of course, have to be tongue-in-cheek humour, I don't think it is worth making a serious game around the forum like that.

I actually quite like a lot of this idea. With a bit of tweaking I think it could fit into the origenal story Jason had.
I think it would have a comedy center with serious bits occasionally...

I really like the idea that they're trying to steal the "rubies and sprites" from the resource mines.
I think the idea that the place is dystipian cyberpunk style is cool, but I dunno if it would fit this. Maybe give it either an urban style OR go full RPG and have it castles and shit.

I'll give a more indepth view upon this when I get home from work maybe.

Hmm... seems too "serious" of an idea, although that doesn't mean I don't like it! The current idea that me and Potion have, which I'm going to introduce to Strawberry/Melanii/WhatevershechangeshernametonextIjustputMelaniibecausethat'shercurrentnameeventhoughIalwayscallherStrawberryanyways... is that you're playing as a new member that you get to name and such, whereas all of the members will already be part of the story, and yes, even the eZine too, infact, that's going to show up quite often, I've not talked to anyone about the inclusion of the eZine, but I have an idea where it would work great!

Serious stories can be funny. There's nothing that'll draw you into the plot more than a nice, lighthearted story that suddenly rips out your soul and crushes it when things get serious.

(Or maybe I've just been playing too many Atlus games lately.)

The humour I was going for with that quick idea was pretty much a juxtaposition, going full frontal slapstick in a game is risky, you should look at the nameless mod it really does prove a game about a forum community can be done, it's a comedy in the same sense of my idea above

Oh, don't worry, it's not going to be like lots of silly jokes one after another, there's definitely going to be a constrast in terms of the humour and story, and I reckon I can find a way to have both without either seeming out of place.

I've vaguely heard of The Nameless Mod, it's the Deus Ex thing, right? I've not actually played it, but I've heard it's supposed to be really good, lol.

Anyways, the story I'm thinking up so far definitely relates to our forums and will include some events that have happened here in the past... hint hint

The list of included members has increased by the way, but I'm not saying by how much, lol, I'm also, right now actually, fleshing character stories and such, which reminds me:

If anyone wants to be included as a character in the game, speak up, don't feel like you've been forgotten! Although to be honest, chances are you're already in the game and I'm just being a dick and not saying, lol

You know, I once made a serious detective drama about Hybrida fighting against the totalitarian guvment (admins), which opened in a jazz bar.

Venetia was his inside informant.

I don't remember that. I would have loved to see that. D:

Also, I guess I wouldn't mind a role in the story, since I've been here since roughly just after the dawn of time. Doesn't have to be anything major since I've more or less, um... disappeared?

So, me Potion and Strawberry have been on Skype together for HOURS now, and idea wise we're making tons of progress!

I think we're agreed on the idea I've come up with for the introduction to the game, I promise I'll update the thread with more information once we're comfortable with everything though, I don't want to be posting anything until it's final with all three of us... and until there's actually something to post, since for now it's just an idea, I'll have to write something proper up before showing it.

This is sounding great. Glad to hear this is having serious storyline rather than being just a joke project as I think that's where this sort of thing tends to fall apart.

I wanna be some guy with a clock that hasn't actually paid/rented out the room he's using and everyone knows but for some reason no one manages to do anything about it.

Sounds like a strange "story" there lol, but I'm sure we could squeeze it in there somewhere... or maybe we have but aren't telling you! Anyways...

(Not quite an) Update!

Sorry for the lack of updates over the last few days by the way guys, not much has been happening in terms of development, I mean, I can tell you that we've got a new logo (Just shown it to Strawberry and she seems to like it... I've also given Wyatt a look at it (Since he's like, the head guy of the forums and all, I thought why not), still waiting on his feedback though), originally I was going to create a few designs (Had more than one ready) and let you guys vote, but now I've made one (The one I've shown to Strawberry and Wyatt) that I quite like, and editing it will be easier in the future, should we decide to give it a quick makeover for any reason.

For the rest of tonight (Well, a couple of hours, then bed time!) I'm going to be continuing with what I was doing the other day, fleshing out each character and adding more to the list, personally I think we're got some pretty "creative" characters on the list, lol.

Tomorrow I'll enlighten you with a few more ideas we've got down so far, such as how main quests and sidequests will work, who else will be in the party along with the player, what we're doing for exploration, and so forth like that, there's probably something else I can talk about too, but I don't want to be talking about things that aren't ready or finalised, and then disappointing you afterwards by not being able to deliver... although right now nothing is 110% final anyway, since y'know, we're still in the VERY early stages, lol.

... Oh yeah, check the thread tomorrow to see the new logo too!

Big Update: How quests are handled, who will be in the party, exploration, and something else! ...Oh yeah and the new logo!

Right, so yesterday I said I'd enlighten you on some of the ideas we've got down, and if I could I'd talk about something else, which is new, I mean, we're not really in the position to do so yet since there isn't even a prototype or anything, but I'm sure we can get it to work, so I'm gonna' go ahead and blab anyways, because y'know, typing is fun!

First up on the agenda, how quests are handled:

There are going to be two types of quests in the game, main quests and side quests, nothing special there, right? But the way they're handled is going to be completely different, I'll break them down for you now...

Main quests are story related, they're going to use their own set of maps, since the game is open world, so y'know, they're instance based, to keep the story contained and so players don't accidentally go somewhere they shouldn't be... we've not decided on just how many there's going to be yet, but yeah, the entrance to them will appear on the world map, for example, the entrance to a cave, and when you've finished a main quest, you can return to the area it took place in and explore, maybe we'll add some treasure chests that you couldn't reach during the quest... who knows!

Side quests are, well, they're not story related, easy enough, right? These take place in the open world, we've not actually talked about a layout for the map, but we HAVE got a few ideas for some locations... we should really think about planning the world map before adding the locations, lol, but whatever... back to the quests; at the moment, I'm thinking up a side quest of some sort for each member that gets added into the game, you'll all have something that you need help with, and obviously it's the player's job to do so, duh! Side quests are going to feel pretty special because of the reward you get for doing them, but that's coming up later.... that's the "something else", so stay where you are!

Next... who's in the party?!

Right, now this is how it's going to play out, as you know from the main post, the player is a "new member", that way nobody is favoured over anyone else, however, this next part might sting... unfortunately not everyone can join the party... that's right, only certain members will be in the party, sort of... here's how it's going to work;

Since we're still figuring out a battle system, the idea I've got, and this may or may not interest people... is that each quest is going to give you a different party with skills more suited to the situation, however, on the final quest, the big showdown pretty much, you'll be free to select your own party... this also ties into the "something else", we're getting closer, sort of.

Exploration now!

Not really sure why I'm saying anything about exploration, it's pretty self explanatory... you walk around and look at things, maybe even find things too! But no seriously, I think we're going to put a little bit of emphasis on exploration, since some locations are going to be visualised based on areas of the forum for example, so maybe you'd be interested in seeing what the rec room would look like as a fantasy location, lol... there's going to be treasure chests set around the world, and Potion is in charge of puzzle design, so they won't only be in quest instances, but actually out in the open world too, and you'll have to solve some puzzles if you want to find some rare items and riches more than you could imagine! I'm really hoping to get the quest areas to be explorable too once you've finished the quest, I mean, it should be easy enough to do, and more locations to look around is always great for the player!

Right, so here we are, the "something else" I've mentioned... first I'm going to open up by telling you how it's related to side quests and the party, then ask a question, if your answer is yes, you know exactly what I mean, if not, reread it!;

Basically, in the game there's a central hub city, it's going to have a castle in the center, which is story related... but the city starts off fairly empty. As you do sidequests for members and complete them, you'll "recruit" them to join your city, and they'll spend their time around the city, maybe they'll open a weapon shop, or have a minigame for you to play, some people might just walk around and make small talk, who does what hasn't been decided yet, but that's the plan so far... now, how does the party come into this? Remember I said in the big showdown you'll be able to pick your own party? Well an idea I've got is that you can't actually start the final quest until you've recruited everyone to your city, you need as much morale and support from the people as you can get! Once you've finished all of the quests except the final one, and you've recruited everyone, whenever you talk to someone, a new option will appear asking them to join your party, so you'll be able to walk around and select who you want to join you defeat the evil whatevermajig!

Now here's the question: Have you ever played Digimon World for the PS1?

And finally, to finish off this update... we do have a new logo, I mean, it's extremely similar to the normal HBGames logo, which is what I was going for, but since I didn't have the actual logo to work with for resizing and such (Resizing a .png image makes it look disgusting due to aliasing and such), I decided to remake it myself, it turned out pretty well I'd say... so yeah, here's the new logo for HBGames: The Videogame;

s1BYdn1.png

I've replaced the old logo in the top post with it by the way, but if you want to see the old logo again, I've left a link in the top post, right at the top under the new logo. Oh, and here's what it looks like in the game window... ignore the title of the project and the map itself for being boring, I just put it into my Over The Horizon game to see how it'd look... you'll notice I added a fourth option to the menu too, "Visit HBGames", it's basically just going to open a webpage to our homepage, that way if the game is distributed among other forums and such, they may press on it and give us a visit!

Image removed: I'll place a better one here once I've made a proper map for the title background

Hopefully you guys will like it, since it took me longer than I'd care to admit to actually get it to look how it does, lol... anyways, as for the next update... I'm not sure when it'll be, but if we start working on something else, I'll be sure to tease you with it before saying anything else! Unfortunately I've not really done anything on it today though, I've actually spent all day on my PS4 pretty much, lol... oh well, we've not got a release date for the game anyway, so there's no rush just yet, although I suppose having a release date and deadlines would produce results faster... hmm, maybe, maybe not, we'll see!

Oh yes the Digimon World 1 model is really lovely, I think it would work well with this idea, I like it.

And how do you feel about having to recruit everyone before you can finish the game, do you think it'd be too much of a time waste, or would you enjoy doing something like that? I mean, I used to love Digimon World for that exact reason, recruiting them all to the village, it gave me such a sense of accomplishment, more so than catching every Pokémon in the games, lol.

I think South Park's the Stick of Truth is a model to look at, all the main characters of the show are not main characters in the game, they're kind of parallel to what's going on to the player, so I think keeping all the forum characters as recruitables into the town is a good move, it means you don't have to focus on particulars for character development and you can be lazier with the writing, which is certainly good.

There is one part of Digimon World that really sticks with me; how lonely the world can get. Your player character can stay in the comfort of the city with lots of characters to talk to and get dialogue out of, but when you need to progress you have to literally prepare for surviving in the wild and then set off on your own, hoping for the best.

Having the goal be recruit a party for the final dungeon is something I personally haven't seen done before, my only worry is that you'll have these characters recruited, and the moment they join your active party you will feel obliged to write story around them, keeping up an active dialogue during the final dungeon, which might detract from the solo aspect of the first 99% of the game, unless you plan on having actors drop in and out of the party while they are recruited?

Also to note of DM1, they don't have that many pointless NPCs, because it is 1 town, the most you get are a couple of Fresh and In-training DigiMon that are hanging about, they even get replaced with recruited monsters later on, perhaps mimic this and try to reduce the number of NPCs? Keep up the feeling of solo-mission.

Another game comes to mind at this point, too; Secret of Mana, the party spend ages in the field and in dungeons with that game, reaching civilisation is a rare chore and always feels like "Finally, safety!" (The game kicks you out of your home town and into the wild in quite the harsh way), DW1 had a similar feeling, but because this isn't a monster rearing game, maybe you should go with Secret of Mana style game-play? In terms of battle-system I'm thinking, but the amount of work needed might put you off that.

Sorry for writing so much, I get really into these game design problems.

EDIT: I think the sense of accomplishment you get out of recruitment in DW1 is different to collecting Pokemon, I think with Digimon it's more of a "I can't believe I survived so long alone, beat the battle and got all the way home and here's the reward!", with Pokemon it's an achievement in the sense of collecting everything, in DW1 I recruited everyone out of the sense of collecting them all, but the good feeling I got wasn't recruiting everyone it was the journey, and the proof of the journey was how diverse the evolution tree of my monster became.
And then fucking Greymon rocks up at your front door and kicks your ass...

Jason

Awesome Bro

Oh, once the members become part of your party, they don't actually have any dialogue in the quests, they're just there to accompany you in battles, otherwise it'd be god awful creating dialogue for every combination of party members! Basically inside the instanced quests, the only dialogue that goes off is between the player and the bad guy(s), the other party members are seen as the... silent protagonists we all know and love from various games, lol.
