Half Kaiser-young girl wip

As I mentioned in my introduction, I would like to be able to sprite eventually.

This is my first attempt at a half-kaiser child, (yeah ik white isn't the best idea )

The thing I find the most frustrating is shadows and where exactly I should place them.

Oh and the purple background is just for easier viewing.

Critisisms are very welcome.

Moved the straps just a tiny bit =x and changed the hair colour, any better?

Original template used is by Showkaiser (I believe)

Cheers, realised it's probably  better if I put a larger image up as the shading might be harder to see on some monitors :dead:

Also done some others but I'm not overly happy bout them. =x

There is an overuse of white, the shading is awkward and symmetrical, and the shoulder straps are in an awkward position.

However, it's better than anything I will ever dream to make.  :) Good work.

Now thats what I was waiting for lol  :thumb:

I know there's a lot of white, perhaps changing the palette a bit would help?

And symmetrical shading isn't good? k, will try to use some tutorials to better it.

Shading is my worst enemy >.<

I thought the straps were ok, so you think maybe closer to the neck? Anyone else think this?

@zenrdy below(didn't wanna post a new reply =x) Lol, not me. It laughs in my face and mocks me ='<

Well, I can think of two things you could do to better it.
One, make sure that the dress is casting a shadow onto the skin, as it isn't doing that everywhere just yet, which looks very awkward.
Second, if you're using colormagix's palettes, try switching them. The pastels have too much contrast in the outline color to look as good as they could.
I'd also recommend using some selout in the dress. Here's a good tutorial on selout.

Ah of course. Clothing shadow *smacks head* cheers.

Uh, didn't really use a palette just using photoshop and my own colours, although the blonde type hair was just a cheap replace colour job lol. Just to see what it was like.

Selout? O.o idk what that is so I'll go check that tut.

Edit: ooooh ok I gotcha. Didn't know it had a name though heh. I'll possibly try that tomorrow as this is my first try and I see myself taking a while figuring out what shades look good where

Thanks muchly for the critique  :thumb:

No problem, and my apologies. The colors looked a lot like the Dewkist palette on colormagix.
(Good) selout makes everything better... it's like the duct tape of pixelling. And you're welcome.

Better? I realise the selout (heh I love that word now) is kinda bad but it was just a rough job to see if that is what you meant?

Not much shading from the clothes onto the skin but a bit.

Edit, @gratheo: (don't want to be banhammered for spamming =x) cheers! but the selout is kinda naff no? as I said I rushed it. But if you

think it's fine then I'll dance the macarena with my blue shoes on.

Hmm ...

Well, I definitely think that's an improvement.

What I think is holding you back are your palettes and the lack of dark tones.

HK Hair looks best with 6-8 colors, I've found--the sweet number there being 6. I thiiink yours has 5. Anyway, that's what I'm counting. I think she needs a highlight color.

Here are some hair palettes I've made--I think the blonde one will work better for you than the one you have there. It's very -- olive/yellow/chartreuse, which isn't a particularly attractive color for blondes. The one I have here has a little bit of red values added which I think makes it more natural:

Just give it a shot, anyway, or use it a premise. It may help.

For her clothes ... Well the sweet spot for clothes is generally 5-6 colors. I think her clothes are too grey. A boost in blue values or purple values will give it some life.

I have a few "white" palettes in there--one more grey/purple and one more blue, and it may help you build your own palette. They're what I use, anyway.

Otherwise, I think your outlines are mostly great, but you're lacking dark shades. You have a lot of highlights, but the midtones and dark shades are lacking. I realize it's a toeheaded girl wearing white, but don't be scared to really give it a lot of mid-dark shades. It makes things look "rounder" and more "realistic". Find a light source (generally, upper-left), and use the subtractive outline methods gratheo mentioned to blend around the light areas.

Like, at the bottom of her dress, you'd have a darker shade, since that part isn't near the light, but around the upper-left portion of the crown of her hair, she'd have a lighter outline.

Lastly, the eyes are WAY too saturated. Knock those bad boys down about a dozen notches in saturation :P.

All that said though, nice progress! Keep it up!

Kay, I have some work ahead of me heh.

Thanks for the palettes, I'll see what I can do, if I can do anything lol.

Yeah..realised that when I posted her, her eyes look like she's been electrocuted or posessed or such.

And yeah, you're right. Coz I wanted her white I was scared of darker shades =x  but the blonde was just a 'replace colour'. Lazy me *whistles*

Ty for all of the comments. I'm learning, I'm getting (very slightly) better. I love it!

Edit: Tada?...

Did't use one of your palettes for the dress Miss V. just kinda improvised by adding a tad of blue but used the hair palettes.

The white one, I kinda used the shades and realised *eep* the highlight lol so I think the blonde's better.

I'm not sure though...cant seem to do the highlight in the upper left well enough

Edits ahoy: uh sorry, the white haired lass seems to have lost her shading below the dress and her straps are in the original place =x Whoops idk how that happened lol
