gimpshop help

hey, i just downloaded gimpshop, it looks like a pretty sweet program, but i have a little simple question, how can i change one color in a pictures into transparent?? i've been trying everything with no result. heres is the picture.

and i want to make the white part transparent, thanks in advance

is the picture indexed or rgb?

if it's indexed, convert it to RGB, and use the magic wand to select all the white areas. then I beleve you simply press delete.
You mar need the duplicate the background layer and delete the origional before you do that.

If it's only a small area that needs to be transparent, I just erase the uneeded color pixel by pixel with the eraser tool

First, choose "Colour Select", Threshold 0, antialiasing false, Click your transparent colour, Layers>>Transparency>>Add Alpha Channel, then press Ctrl+K to make that colour transparent.

and i want to turn everything but the rose into black and white, can i do that with gimp? if yes, how?

use paint! no really!!!!... no dont... you could try photoshop maybe? unless you dont have it... then i dunno...
