Take a look at a cowboy gM, it might help you out a little- especially note the colors and the level of contrast between them. The darker colors have a harder contrast between them, but as it gets lighter, there's less of a contrast. This helps make the shading "pop", and really allows for an outline that doesn't seem out of place.
