Generic RPG Maker XP Game

002title02.png

Once upon a time, a novice game designer became frustrated by the lack of time, money,
and resources available for use in his long-awaited RPG Maker XP project and, in a fit of rage,
smashed his head through a wooden desk. After undergoing extensive physical therapy for several
months in order to cope with his severe head trauma, he awoke to discover that he had been
gifted with a second sight... a sight that told him what his next great project would be.

Meet Generic RPG Maker XP Guy, casual resident and self-proclaimed douche of Generic RPG
Maker XP Village. He's rude, he's crude, and he doesn't care who knows it - he'll crush
(verbally, anyway) anyone who crosses his path, and he's ready to set out on the generic
adventure of a lifetime. Taking out monsters and protecting the innocent is but a pipe
dream to him compared to the thrill of adding insults to his repertoire and new victims to act
as the butt of every joke. Nothing is off-limits in this world, so put up your dukes,
cover your groin, and get ready to jump on in.

Version 0.03 (Demo)

Let me explain myself a bit... this is a serious project in the sense that I intend to release it to the public upon completion, but, like any good developer, I'm actively seeking and open to suggestions on how I can improve both it and any future projects. I apologize if you should decide it's not up to standards for a posted demo and will accept thread movement/deletion/whatever you decide is fitting; my tester (and collaborator on some unrelated projects) estimated his play time as between 20 and 30 minutes his first time playing it, and my main reason for posting it here is in hopes of taking care of any criticisms or gameplay problems early on rather than having to turn the whole thing upside down once I've got a significant amount of content created. While this is a comedic title that makes a point to be as generic and simplistic as possible, it will make up for it by having a massive amount of content and extra features included.

I hope this is allowed to stay here on the forums - if it does, and the feedback isn't completely negative, I'll likely update in the future with a more elaborate demo and later the full release, maybe posting updates in the meantime. It really depends on whether or not you, the people, think this could turn out well or not. That being said, please feel free to post any questions or comments and notify me of any bugs or errors, including spelling. =)

i cant help but be interested in this.... and i dont know why. but you should include a battle or war featuring xp against vx or some wacked out generic goodness like that

I looked at the screenshots - does the mapping supposed to be horrible?
The link is bad... It stopped downloading after like 300 kb and all I was left with was an unfinished rar file... Try uploading to rapidshare :blank:

Do I smell... a sequel? No, actually, I've never used or even seen VX before. Most of the things I've heard about it have been negative, so I'm not really that eager to try it out. I might take a look if there's a free trial available, but I'm quite happy with XP.

Come on, be reasonable. I freely acknowledge that my maps are rather subpar, but they're not horrible. Admittedly I might have not put very much thought into where I was taking screenshots, though... I notice a lot of them were taken near the border between maps. Since transfers are done without fading, the first 10 rows/columns on each map are limited in that they can't contain any tiles that aren't on the adjacent map's tileset. And while it could have been said a little more constructively, I very much intend to improve on my mapping skills - my main problem lies in my inability to add minor details (vines, shrubs, decorations...) because... well, I just don't have the sense of style for it. But I'll experiment and see if I can't spruce the mapping up a bit for the next release.

Also, it's not an RAR file, it's a ZIP. I suppose I could upload it on Rapidshare if you really need it, but I personally find it to be an insufferable hassle compared to zShare. If other people are having trouble with the link, too, I'll likely reupload it somewhere else, but I've never heard of anyone having trouble with zShare.

Lastly, is the site under maintenance or something? I had to follow an obscure link from the forum homepage because your posts weren't showing up when I used the direct link, and I didn't see the thread anywhere in the Project Discussion folder, either... maybe it's just a problem on my end.

That sounds like a good Idea. I might do that myself.

Would a Mediafire link be too much of a hassle? I just find it the fastest y'know?

But I gotta say I really love that Title Screen

Thanks for the rapidshare link, ill download it and have a closer look later... As for the mapping I didn't meant to sound harsh but I really do want to know if the mapping is supposed to look like this... The shop mapping made my stomach turn - too many items in such a small room, there is almost no room there, no counter (apparently boxes are enough for the poor bald man), and the shopkeeper seem to just stand there. The other maps are empty like a desert, repetitive, and too simple. And when you take screenshots you want to show the best settings and places you got and take the best of the best, not the borders of the map where you can't put anything anyway, so I would suggest you to improve your mapping skills considerably before releasing the game itself and improving the existing maps... Again, unless this is supposed to look that way.

I've found a few bugs in the demo I posted (I suppose I shouldn't have placed so much faith in my playtester), so for those of you who haven't downloaded it yet, you may want to wait until I upload the fixed version later today. I've never used Mediafire, so I don't know - I suppose I could try it when I update it later.

And I really don't know what you want me to say, Germel. I understand that my maps are rather empty and I'm trying my best to improve them with RMXP's limited resources - it's not going to happen overnight, or maybe not at all. I don't see anything wrong with the shop map, though - there's little room because it's a small shop with a lot of merchandise. Simple explanation. Gameplay-wise, it doesn't need much room because the only thing you can do in there is speak to the shopkeeper. It's an equipment shop, so if I included a counter there would be nothing to place on it, and once you meet the shopkeeper I somehow doubt you'll consider him a pitiable person.

I was more concerned with variety in the screenshots - getting a picture of everything (weapon animations, the battle screen, enemies on the field, etc.) You're right, though, I should have given more thought to where I was taking them as well. If I have the time I may replace some of the screenshots later today as well.

EDIT: Updated the download link with the new, to my knowledge bugless version of the game. Also note the new mini-site.

Well I actually enjoyed it until I reached a bug xD

After I fought a few more bees on the way to Doublin, I got to the junction. I read the signboard and decided to go north. Talked with the man, he said his shit that I can't go. Then it stopped, no crashes, just all events stop moving. Even the bees nearby.

But I gotta say it's a pretty good game, considering what you're trying to achieve. Good job.

And that's in the new, updated version I posted on the minisite?

If so, I could have sworn I ironed that bug out earlier... I'll take another look, though, thanks for the notice.

I won't be clicking any links to see the screenies, I want them here, in this topic.

Picky picky picky... -_-

I'll try to post them later.

As I see it shops don't have to be full of items with no place to move in order to give the impression that the store has variety of items to offer. about the gameplay-wise explanation, its a wrong assumption. If I wanted to make a house I could have just created it with one small room with a window and a bed and a door, you wake up in the bed walk 3 steps and exit the door, so why do people make big houses with lots of rooms? for the authenticity! they want it to look like a real house, as should you aspire to make it look like a real shop, which in no way look like that, well at least most shops don't look like that.
I suggest you go to recruiting forum and look for a mapper, it could give you more spare time for working on other things and improve the quality of the maps. Just a suggestion.
I will go through your demo and tell you what I think of it later.
