General Mapping Question

I'm not really sure where this would go, but here is my question:

Is a large map better to break into a bunch of smaller maps, or would it be better to have all of the map contiguous? For example, say I had a building interior like so

[=====[  ]=====]
||        | |      ||
||        | |      ||

With the area between the lines being a hallway or something. Would it be best both aesthetically and in transition to have each hallway be a separate map, or should I just make them all the same building? My concerns are that large maps may cause choppiness because of their size whereas more smaller maps might have too many transitions. What are your thoughts/advice on this?

It's really all down to preference.  If I have an interior like a house, I'll usually use 1 map per floor.  If I have a dungeon I use far more maps so it's easier to make puzzle rooms, battling rooms, hidden rooms etc.

It's like games like Final Fantasy 7-9, the map would constantly refresh, but newer RPG's often have seamless maps.  I personally prefer the nostalgic feel.  You're right too, on event heavy maps it can help with lag.

I cannot tell what you mean from your diagram, but either way no one is likely to criticise you.

Like calibre said, its down to preference.

I'd say a good idea is to keep it a little inbetween. What i do, is make multiple mid-size maps.
In example, i've mapped a somewhat large desert. Probably over 400x300, the kind of size that will lag horribly. But i've broken it down into many 30x30-50x50 maps.

Keeping a balance in between large maps, and many smaller maps will likely help to solve both problems. Fewer transitions, and less likely to lag.

yeah, as some above has said, things like Houses and even some small towns and villages can be made in one map. Tings like dungeons, deserts, even big cities must be broken down if you plan to have a lot of events on them.
Then again ... there's always an anti-lag script ...
