Game Maker 8

YoYo Games' GameMaker8 is now in open Beta. Anybody can join in at http://gm8.yoyogames.com/

It's a Beta, so obviously it would have glitches.

There's a new script editor, and a new image editor, as well as full .png support, like RPG Maker.

For those unfamiliar with Game Maker, it is essentially a cheaper and better games development suite. Unfortunately not many people here are familiar with it.

Alpha levels on png files are a definate plus over version 7, that's for sure.

the fact that it didn't natively support alpha was one of my major complaints with gammaker 7. I'm interested to see what they mean by "new script editor," too. what GM7 had was fairly cool in and of itself, especially in that it was possible to check for syntax errors right in the script window itself, saving you some time with testing. if they've improved things further, I'm interested.

this is cool, nice find bro.

I love Game Maker, have been using it for like, six years now. I didn't know GM8 was in beta yet- that's actually pretty fast for a GM release.

Game Maker is harder to make RPG's with than RPG Maker because you have to make the system from scratch, but it really is a really nice and powerful system. I've done networking, 3d, shooters, platformers, puzzle games, tower defence, you name it with this system. I even know someone who made a Final Fantasy Tactics system with it (I even got a copy of the file, the coding is cazy).

Scripting is beautiful, and it's so easy to learn the language <3 The Help file rawks so hard.

Thanks for the tell, I'll be dling this for sure.

YO YO - sounds like some nigger tech...

'But in all seriousness Gamer Maker is a wonderful program - bit unfriendly though...
The only problem is that if you use the free version you're gonna get a slew of errors if you try any game made by anybody - sucks for those who like freebies

free version is fine for projects so long as you're using the standalone exe file and not the project file. there are some methods that you can't use with the free version of game maker (and so a project that uses them won't work if you open it in the free editor) but programs made with it are natively standalone applications.

the only problem with game maker in general is it has to load pretty much every bit of its library every time it starts up so the time an average game maker project takes to boot is notably longer than most other applications. if they find some way to fix this in the future, though, that'll be cash.

It's really not much of a problem until you get to sound files, which inflate your game to ridiculous levels, but that can be solved by loading in the sound files from a different directory. That way, you can have a large 5-10 meg project that references your much better 50 meg sound directory without an issue with loading times or filesize.
