I just played Frontier Elite II but I'm going to play Frontier First Encounters too!
Anyways, let me tell you about this amazing game.
My babbling
Its AMAZING, this game is like running in DOS, but yet it can generate LOTS of objects, and quite detailed for a DOS 3D game too! It generates from the humble escape pod to one huge gigantic battleship or even a PLANET. Yup, a full planet in true 3d, not some 2.5D stuff.
Programming wise, this guy must have MAXIMISED every single BYTE.
Here are some screenshots from Frontier First Encounters (FFE)
And please remember that this is in DOS mind you I'll have to call you officially retarded or a young child if you try to compare this with current generation games or say "the graphics sucks" and not realizing this is a DOS game.
There's LOTS of free roaming in these games, in fact, the first 2 games do not even have a storyline, but FFE has, but its still completely optional.
Theres lots of jobs to take, from being a humble miner or trader, into smuggling and being a hitman.
If I analyse something correctly, license number plates and models colors and stuff are randomly generated. So the game does not PRELOAD the graphics, it generates a whole system ( i.e. solar system) in a SECOND. Yup, all the planets and ships are generated .
Now go try it, they are not found easily anymore, but I heard you can buy them through the internet? If not, its classified as abandonware... so... google!
Oh and heheh look at some engine remake.
Now thats insanity.
