Welcome to HBGames, a leading amateur game development forum and Discord server. All are welcome, and amongst our ranks you will find experts in their field from all aspects of video game design and development.
I will be posting most of my musical compositions here for everyone to see and comment/critique on. Along with the songs I will also post the projects they are being used in along with their links, that way the projects that help me gain exposure will also gain exposure. That's a win-win as I see it.
All of these are free to use in any way that is noncommercial, I only require notification that they are being used and a spot in the credits. If you wish to use any of these in a commercial way, please PM me.
Thanks, samboy. I know what you mean about the harp, that's how I originally had it, but I decided that since the person telling about their "fantastic journey" was excited, they wouldn't start off soft.
O well, first of all i recommend you not to put so many songs in the same post jaja, BELIEVE ME!
And because you want it!...
In the Fantastic Journey i dont know why you put the whistle... better put other thing like Triangles o something like that...
Eerynes, sounds good but the piano doesnt make any bends or slides.
It seems like you are not used to play with the two hands in the piano, because in all the songs the music is kinda empty, i mean, you should play the bass notes (at least) with the left hand.
The orchestation is poor, i recommend you play more with the instruments and the melodies.
I hope there will be no misunderstandings with my critiques, but is for the best!
Thanks for the comments Midi_Master. I'm keeping all my compositions in this thread for easy access, and organization on my part. About the music...well I can't actually play any of it, I just compose it in Finale. And, if I'm interpreting this correctly, you said to make my music more full. I will try to work on that.
Because you're taking these comments so well, I've decided to make a spoiler for each, and tell you what you may (or may not) want to change in your next update.
I like this one, but does not sound very eerie, as it doesn't stick to the bass line, and instead goes off in random tangents. Only the first and last parts of the song sound eerie, but I like it.
However, the part in the middle where it resembles somewhat like the Mission Impossible Theme is repulsive. It sounds like someone just hammering a keyboard to pieces, and does not fit in with the song at all.
This piece with the middle part tweaked a little will be fantastic, and even though it is not nearly eerie enough, it proves a decent smooth song, which I find similar to a scene in Pokemon Pearl... I can't quite remember. Oh well... moving on.
This starts off with a decent melody and accompanying notes, but you must remember that when one plays the piano, you can't play the lower notes as loud as the high notes, and vice versa. Stick to keeping the higher notes slightly softer, and there will be a better sound over all. It finishes well.
I quite like this song, it would be useful for a last scene, or farewell. Well done.
I'm not too sure about this one, could be used as a fast paced battle theme, but I'm not a very good analyzer at fast melodies. I do however like the glockenspiel/celesta through the song, could be a little softer.
I love harp beginnings to games, especially with flute. I think this song builds too quickly, but if your cut-scenes are fast, then I guess your music should be fast as well... Good use of instruments.
Rather similar to "The Hero", and starts out sounding much like a song you would hear on todays radio. I don't really understand the background behind this song, so I guess I'll leave that up to you. :D Most artists have stories behind their songs, so I'm sure you'll have yours too.
The starting notes on the strings are too high in my opinion, but the rest of the song is rather nice. Some of the strings are a little excessive, remember music is meant to complement your game, not take it over! ^_^ Like the drum part, really makes the song. Nice work!
I quite like this one, possibly my favorite out of the ones you have displayed. You have done a marvelous job at making these MIDI's, they sound quite grand. The chord changes and guitar is quite smooth, and sounds great. I love the speed up near the end... just great.

Well I don't see why that's wrong, considering you can't bend or slide a piano.

It's also quite hard to make MIDI's sound "full", as they are straight notes instead of physical instruments, but try your best.
I have Sibelius 5 at home, which I use for my scoring/composing. It's a fantastic little program, and you say you use Finale. I've also used that in the past, which is great and possibly has better MIDI support than Sibelius does.
From what you've shown, you're becoming a great composer. Keep it up. :thumb:
Wow, I really appreciate you taking the time and critiquing all my songs, samboy. I'll keep all of those in mind when composing my next MIDIs. I would like to say that I don't play any musical instruments, although I am learning the guitar very slowly. I'm pleased that you like the songs and wish that I knew more about music to make them better. Hopefully my upcoming ones will get better. I won't be tweaking these at all, since I want to be able to see how I've gotten progressively better, or worse, throughout my compositions.
Memories of old... the name seems kinda out of place, don't you agree? I guess it's just me ^^.When I listen to this song, I think of an undiscovered place waiting for adventurers...(It's just my opinion though. Forget it.) And this song is a little unattractive, easily making me bored. But, it still have some nice melodies.
Eeriness... Good! I could listen to this song more than 4 times in a row. Way to go!
You could start making some nice songs with memorable melodies 'cause you have talent.
A nice song is a song with memorable melody. You only hear it, you could sing along. That's what I call a good song.
