Fox5's HKCP Contest Workshop

Ok Now I have more time to critic.
I'll attempt Vene's style of comments as it is most helpful.

(1) As I mentioned before, your shading of the frame conflicts with your present light source.
IMO the rtp are HORRIBLE references for spriting.

(2) The wood work is great start, however the rest of the house seems... empty and plain. Perhaps try adding more wood work in, or even stone or thatching. Something to make it stand out better.

(3) The brocks lack depth, since as things become higher up, the the shading should reflect the increase in light. Also from my knowledge, bricks are hardly ever just gray. Throw some colours in make it interesting!

To expand on what Berserker said about the bricks, they need texture. No bricks are perfectly flat. Experiment with your shades until you come up with a texture you like, and then mimic that throughout the bricks.

Yay! A good start!
Nooo... More to do...

Right, I better get started on editing the house again. I'll add some more depth to the stones at the bottom, but how should I shade the top bar? I can't seem to get it right. I'll also have less time to work on any of this now, cause it's back to school tomorrow. :( But I'll start work on this now.

Just a quick question, wouldn't those open un-detailed areas be covered by windows though? Oh well.

Sonata: Texture? What do you mean?

EDIT: Oh, yeah forgot this:

That's all the different parts. God, the cloak looks crap when it's off the template.

Assuming the vertical piece of wood on the house is on top of the others, it should stick out more on the bottom. I'm not a pixel artist so I can't really give you any more advice.

Ok nice going Fox.
I'll have to say your wood textures are looking a bit messy at parts so I'll have to say clean them up a tad, remember what Vene said abot when you change your palette you notice the flaws.

The bricks could use more contrast and some colour.

You fixed the top wood part, thats good :D

Yay, I'm getting somewhere.
But... messy? I thought I'd sorted those...
And i've changed the palette, and I don't see any flaws...

And I'll change the bricks, I just wanted to make sure the texture was right.

Oh, this is how the man is coming on:

I changed the palettes and shaded the skin.

EDIT: Um, what colours should I do the bricks? I like the grey they are at the moment... :(

I love HK, so much detail to add and it looks nice. I like your tunic, looks like Link almost, a more built link......

I'm not an expert spriter but wouldn't you shade under a belt, or is the belt a flat object

For the bricks i mean colour as in...

Also adding some more light towards the top of the bricks gives it some depth.

Also my messy wood textures i mean like this...
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d50/j ... ge1-14.png[/imgzoom]
Top:      Your's
Bottom:  Mine

Do you notice the difference? you shade along the grain of the wood, not just random. Long stretches of shading.

You'll have to wait for vene to come back to validate your submission for the tunic.

The other guy, his metal armor and boot look like they need another shade, for highlights because it looks very dark. it lacks definition too. Increase the contrast it, just like the bricks, give it some colour (gray is so boring).

I tried out your green tunic and I have some suggestions for you.

Front view: The collar doesn't move. The sprite bounced up and down and the creases and folds match, but the collar just stays in the same position.
The way the sleeves are shaded in the steping frames bug me but they aren't really that noticable.
The dark crease at the bottom of the tunic in the stepping frames is really noticeable. I think it should be lighter like it is in the back views.

Side views:
The shadow on the sleeves mysteriously disappears.
EDIT:
Also the belt looks a little low.
And I think the bottom part would hang looser in the steping frames. (also could be more heavely shaded)
Edit2: AND the collar stops at the top of the shoulders instead of going all the way around.
ignore any marks I made in the back view. There is an inconsistency I discovered  in the new male templates and have informed the other members about it.
