FLL logo

Cool, so I'm on an FLL team now (oh god what have I gotten into, and the name, ugghh)
Too make sure one thing turned out well (the T-shirts) I made the logo myself, here it is:

This is my first time really experimenting with colors, and pallets - so bear with me

Of course there's no way you can put a tiny logo on a shirt so I used the hq4x algorithm twice to blow it up, fixing some things in photoshop at the midstage (note I am not a photoshop god)
Theoretically that could be considered visual art, but I want them to stay together, and since its just blown up with an algorithm and my original image is pixel art, I decided to put it here...

Filters on pixel art are usually sacrilege, and this is no exception. Tbh, if you're going to blow this up and put it on a t-shirt, you should just use the straight pixels. The filter is tacky and unnecessary. However, that said, this would look weird on a t-shirt. If you're making a logo, what you should really do is vector it in Illustrator or something (Photoshop works too but isn't really designed for that) so you can rescale it infinitely without loss of quality.

I gotta go now, but I'll critique the design and pixel art later if I get a chance and don't forget.

I know you're looking for critique on pallet and not form, but...

It would look loads better (to me, at least) if you put the cross on top of the purple bit (what is that, btw?) It's just not balanced as-is.

As for the pallet, eh. The wood could use a bit more variety, I think (more yellows, maybe) and higher contrast. I'm also noticing a grey cog in front of the purple bit... that could really do to stand out more, I can barely see it.

Yeah I realized its not balanced a while ago
Redesigned here:

(btw way those are wands  , weren't my idea - I just had to go with the flow on that - team members urrk :barf: )

Oh yeah, this exists. Okay, yeah, this isn't working compositionally for me. There's no coherence or unity to the logo. It looks like you just took some random items and kind of put them next to each other, and it doesn't read as one unit. You need to add structure and framing and things like that. I don't really know how to offer suggestions on it, but an example of something better would be, I dunno, a wizard hat over a big gear with the wands crossed behind the gear. Except I think the wands need to go (screw your teammates if they disagree). You also need more unified palettes, but we'll address that once you get a decent working design.

As far as pixel art goes, the outline helps, but it still looks flat. You textured it in lieu of giving it volume. Texture should be the last thing you do, not the first. My advice would be to start the shading over with that in mind, and when you get to texture, Google pics of things like cloth and metal instead of just putting mad amounts of dithering on everything. But tbh I still think that the pixel art thing isn't really working. A logo should be crisp, clean, and simple--it should be instantly readable and instantly recognizable. It should also be versatile, which means it should look equally good on a t-shirt or a billboard or a website header, which implies you need to be able to infinitely scale it without quality loss. I still really, really think you should vector it instead of doing pixel art. If you don't know how to do vectors, now's a great time to learn, and I promise it'll pay off!

Actually, Peri No matter what the final product, It's going to be converted to a vector...

I'm going to go try and put some more work in it later,
but the point wasn't really to have something outstanding, I just something that doesn't look like it was clip art slapped together in 5 minutes in paint

I don't know how to do vectors - Any Tutorial, etc. that will point me in the right direction(s)?

Starting with pixel art is kind of odd in that case, but whatever works for you, I guess. The filtered thing in the first post certainly wasn't a vector, though.

If something's worth doing, it's worth doing right. If you ask me, half-assing it is doing a disservice both to your team and to yourself. I think you should make it as good as you can. And I mean, you have some good ideas; they just could stand to be refined.

I don't know of any offhand, but they shouldn't be hard to find.

I was pointing out that you said you weren't trying to make something outstanding, and I think you should try to make something outstanding every time you make anything. :p Anyway, are you going to fix it up some? If so, I'll keep an eye out for the next version.
