First Sprite Advice/Critque

Well ostensibly i am a programmer but i am starting out and seriously trying my hand at spriting. After a bit of searching and deciding to settle on halfkaizer for my template for my future work and eventual game project i found a rather nice video on youtube and pretty much used it to take a crash course on spriting.

That guy makes it look easy. For starters it took me like 5 times as much time as him. I started by following very closely trying to match color and line but as time went on and gained confidence i deviated a great deal on the later parts going as far as just using the video as more of a guide. Functionaly i suppose it is the same sprite but detail wise they are quite different i think his end product is still better than mine but i am pretty happy with how mine turned out and i think learned a few things. Well it is really my first sprite and i am pretty new to these forums so i thought i would ask what the more experienced spriters think of my first attempts and maybe give a few pointers. Including to now how go about animating my sprite.

I think you are giving me too much credit it is easy to copy strokes and be visibly guided in making a sprite. Doing it yourself and figuring out what each part is supposed to look like yourself is alot harder. I am still learning so why should i never use pure black? Don't know these little rules or the reasons for them.

The person who did the tutorial is a girl. LOL. She used to be quite active here. Otherwise, a decent start at spriting.

Definitely try not to use pure black. It is too dark, in most situations, but not all. Your pallette needs work as well, not enough contrast.

I would also recommend looking into the Pixel Art Analysis section of this forum. There, take a look at the Helpful Resource/Tutorial thread. Lots of goodies in there.

Good luck to you.
