Fire! Smoke! Water coming out of sewage pipes and whatnot!

I know this is probably one of the more basic things in making these games, but I can't figure out for the life of me how to do this. I simply want say, a torch on the wall that actually dances. Or smoke to actually billow out of the chimney. I've tried creating an event and using the flame as the graphic, setting it's autonomous movement to custom and then having it move down and turn down (I tried both) on "repeat action," I've tried to set the trigger to "run parallel" and "autorun." I give up. I have no idea what to do.

Please help me!!
