Final Fantasy VX Pictures

Hi,
  I've been looking in the Pictures folder of Final Fantasy VX and have found several pictures of the characters in the game. I would like to ask if anyone know a tutorial on how to make the transparency when drawing in 2d (not pixel) because all the pics are in 16millions colors and yet when shown in the game or any graphic software(Gimp,Photoshop...), the background is always transparent. Can anyone help please?

What format are the pictures?  It will probably be easy to tell you what they did if we know what format they are in.

Use the Magic Wand Tool in Gimp and select all the areas you want to make transparent by holding Shift while you select them one after another?
Oh but after you select all the transparent area (should be easy in that picture) right click (this is in Gimp), go to Select, then Invert. Now Copy. Now go to new, set the background to transparent, leaving dimensions as they are, and paste. Now you can save it in any format, like PNG or JPEG.
