Female Circumsion: Mild Social Practice, or violent crime?

The other topic made me think of, what I consider, the genital mutilation of women. I was just wondering what people though about both the practice, and the countries practicing it. The articles below are generaly intersting, if brief, reads.

All I can say to that is that I'm glad I'm not in africa.

The act itself seems to be done as a ritual under no surgical conditions and solely for the purpose to keep woman under the direction of the sociaty and culture they are in.

Frankly I see no real reason to perform such acts and find it slightly grotesque that anyone would willing have, in the extreme cases, have their genitalia stiched together, by someone less qualified then a moose on pot.

I honestly never really thought about this even happening, and now that I know of this happening it makes me wonder what sort of person would willing give up on the prospect of having a family forever.

1981-JAN-29: The Great Sheikh of Al-Azhar (the most famous University of the Islamic World) stated that parents must follow the lessons of Mohammed and not listen to medical authorities because the latter often change their minds. Parents must do their duty and have their daughters circumcised.

The huge difference here is the clitori is cut off at 11, and the woman will remember every second of it. So its completely unjustifiable under any circumstance for me. And they'll be reminded of it with every painful sexual act. Its probably the most chovanistic ritual still being carried out in modern time. And I think its bullshit that people can't really speak out publically against it right now because of sensitivity issues yet I can make fun of any facet of the Catholic church any time of year and get barely any flack for it. Its a bad double standard, especially since IMO this practice is a lot more barbaric than forbidding condom use.

Wow... didn't know there was such thing a female circumcision... I mean it's so common with males ('specially with filipino males like me) it's almost a rite of passage as Sabao said... but Female circumcision? Really really odd to me. How one thing can be such a simple thing for males can be life threatning to females is really quite mind boggling. I read through some of the articles and I must say I feel that it's kinda' a wrong thing to do for a girl....

wow, I never heard of Femal Circumsion, and I'm muslim(my family is religious). I thaught it was a typo in the title XD.

After reading the article, I was reliefed this wasn't a muslim practice lol. It seems cruel. I know, Dauble Standard but w/e.

I came from a modern muslim country, Turkey, so I guess thats why I didn't hear about it.

This is one of those times when you go: "Ew, but it is their culture..."

However, that is a dangerous way of thinking, because then you can think "Oh, they're killing people, ew, but it is their culture..."

So, I usually think like this: "It's wrong, and I don't like it, but what I can do about it? Nothing. In that case, I will do nothing as long as they don't try to force it on girls I know".

Female circumcision is not circumcision as you would think of it comparing with men. Removal of the clitoris is more akin to hacking the top off someone's penis. It's now given the more accurate name of "Female Genital Mutilation", and is completely wrong.

Its not Islam, its people speaking on 'behalf' of Islam. Think of them as self-appointed popes, but there are tens of hundreds of them instead of just one.

Fatwas are published opinions by Muslim religious scholars. They are non-binding in law. But Muslim believers are expected to follow them. In Egypt, a number of Fatwas have been issued by the influential Egyptian Fatwa Committee on FGM:

Roman has the right of it; this isn't simply slicing off skin (bad enough) - this is slicing off a body part for no reason other than tradition and ignorance.

It does serve a purpose, though, so its not purely traditional. Its chovanism. By taking away the pleasure of sex they take away the primary motive a woman would have for cheating on a man. However, since they DONT do it to men, men are forcing themselves on wunwilling women to placate their sexual desires, and the WOMEN are being punished typically when its revealed. They're stoned to death for allowing themselves to be raped...
Really the more you learn about the motives behind it the sicker you'll feel. Its hard to believe this is going on in the 21st century.

Well, ritually, all circumcision is wrong. It is acceptable for medical reasons for males I believe.

That's for discussion in the actual Circumcision thread. And it does not protect against AIDS. The only protection against AIDS, I'm sorry to say, is not to fuck around so much. There is no quick fix to this problem.

I firmly stand on my grounds to say female circumsicion is wrong. There is no purpose other than to lower chances of affairs. Hell, if the female can't have pleasure, why not cut off the male's glans to lower his?

Because men want to retain the right to cheat on their wives. Pretty obvious. Hence, chovanistic society(the 5th time Im used the phrase in this thread). Its not a religion thing, its a 'man ego' thing using some archaic mistranslation of Islam as justification.
