Fallout 3 - New Vegas

Story
The game places the player in the role of a courier. While delivering a package with a platinum poker chip and NCR war documents to a town called Primm, the player is ambushed by a man named Benny Gecko (who steals the package and shoots him/her in the head and left in a shallow grave. The Courier is rescued by a robot named Victor who brings him or her to Doctor Mitchell. Thereafter the player enters into character creation (defining skills and attributes, name, gender, age and appearance) before investigating the assassination attempt, recovering the stolen package, and exploring the world.

Gameplay
The player determines the race, the gender, and the general appearance of their character and determines the first three Skills they wish to focus on. Skills and Perks are similar to those in previous games: Skills can be gradually assigned and give players increasing degrees of ability; for instance, increasing the lock pick skill grants the player the ability to open harder to unlock doors. With each level, the player can allocate more points to their skills and a new Perk, some requiring specific stat levels or karma levels, each offering advantages of varying quality and form.

Another important statistic tracked in the game is karma. Each character has an aggregate amount of karma which can be affected by the decisions and actions made in the game. Positive karma actions include freeing captives and helping others. Negative karma actions include killing good characters and stealing. Beyond acting as flavor for the game's events, karma can have tangible effects to the player, primarily affecting the game's ending. Other effects include altered dialogue with (NPCs), or unique reactions from other characters. Actions vary in levels of karma; pickpocketing produces less negative karma than the killing of a good character. The player's relationships with the game's factions are distinct, so any two groups or settlements may view the player in contrasting ways, depending on the player's conduct.

Health is separated into two types: general and limb. General health is the primary damage bar, and the player will die if it is depleted. Limb health is specific to each portion of the body, namely the arms, legs, head, and torso. Non-human enemies will sometimes have additional appendages. When a limb's health bar is depleted, that limb is rendered "crippled" and induces a negative status effect, such as blurred vision from a crippled head or reduced movement speed from a crippled leg. Health is diminished when damage is taken from being attacked, falling from great distances, and/or accidental self injury. General health can be replenished by sleeping, using medical equipment (stimpaks), eating food, or drinking water. Limbs can be healed directly by injecting them with stimpaks, by sleeping, or by being healed by a doctor.

There are also secondary health factors which can affect performance. Chief among these is radiation poisoning: most food is irradiated to a small degree, and parts of the world have varying levels of background radiation. As the player is exposed to radiation, it builds up, causing negative effects and eventually death if left untreated. Radiation sickness must be healed by special medicine or doctors. The player can also become addicted to drugs and alcohol, and then go through withdrawal symptoms if denied those substances. Both afflictions can blur the player's vision for a few seconds and have a negative effect on SPECIAL attributes until the problem is corrected.

Another game mechanic is item degradation. The more weapons and armor are used or damaged in combat, the less effective they become. Firearms do less damage and may jam during reloading, and apparel becomes gradually less protective. This will eventually result in the item breaking altogether. Items can be repaired for a price from special vendors, or if the player has two of the same item (or a comparable item), one can be cannibalized to repair the other.

Players also have the option to create their own weaponry using various scavenged items found in the wasteland. These items can only be created at workbenches, and only if the player possesses the necessary schematics or the necessary Perk. These weapons usually possess significant advantages over other weapons of their type. Each schematic has three copies to be found. Each copy, up to a maximum of three, improves the condition (or number) of items produced at the workbench. A higher repair skill will also result in a better starting condition for the related weapon. Weapon schematics can be found lying in certain locations, bought from vendors, or received as quest rewards.

The Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System, or V.A.T.S., plays an important part in combat. While using V.A.T.S., real-time combat is paused, and action is played out from varying camera angles in a computer graphics version of "bullet time", creating a combat system that the Bethesda developers have described as a hybrid between turn-based and real-time combat. Various actions cost action points, limiting the actions of each combatant during a turn, and the player can target specific body areas for attacks to inflict specific injuries; head shots can be used for quick kills or blinding, legs can be targeted to slow enemies' movements, opponents can be disarmed by shooting at their weapons, and players can drive certain enemies into a berserker rage by shooting out things like antennae on various overgrown insects and combat inhibitors on armored robots. However, the use of V.A.T.S. also eliminates most of the first-person shooter elements of the game; aiming is taken over by the computer, and the player is unable to move as a means of avoiding attacks.

The Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System, or V.A.T.S. will have the ability to use new special attacks. Usage of certain melee weapons will trigger unique animations. For example, using a 9 iron would show up as "Fore!", and sends the enemy reeling for a period of time. Also, the developer added the ability to use the iron sights on almost all guns, excluding larger weapons that are shot from the hip, with better over-the-shoulder view for third-person combat. New weapons, some Fallout 3 weapons, and a weapon modification system are introduced in Fallout: New Vegas. The modification system allows for weapon modifications, such as mounting scopes, modifying rate of fire, and changing size of magazine. Crafting will also play a role in weaponry, with the player being able to craft ammunition, such as hand-loaded rounds. In addition, a plant-harvesting system similar to The Elder Scrolls series will be in place for the player to use such plants in bullets, chems, for healing, stats, and for other handy uses.

One of the more noticable features of New Vegas is the inclusion of real-world guns, such as the M4A1 Carbine replacing the G3-styled assault rifle of Fallout 3. The use of real-world weapons was also included in Fallout: Tactics. In Fallout Canon, the states of Arizona and Nevada more commonly used 9mm compared to the more powerful 10mm rounds used on the East and West Coast. New weapons, such as the M1 Garand rifle have been included, as well. On the other hand, other weapons such as laser weapons and large guns like miniguns have remained relatively unchanged.

The quantity of factions prompted developers to reintroduce the reputation system that was absent in Fallout 3. The degree of faction loyalty influences the player's reputation. Reputation affects the behavior of faction non-player characters (NPCs) toward the player, and reflects the impacts of selected choices in the world. Karma is also a factor, but is independent of faction reputation (the player can rob a faction member, lowering his karma, but leaving his reputation unchanged assuming he isn't caught). Availability of dialogue options with NPCs are based upon skills, reputation and karma. Skills have a bigger effect on conversation choices. Whether a dialogue option will succeed or fail is shown up front, and entirely dependent on skill level, rather than chance as seen in Fallout 3. Companion behavior and tasks are controlled using the new "companion wheel." Fallout 3 presented companion commands in a conversational dialogue menu. The new Companion Wheel offers command execution by selecting commands that are presented in a radial and graphical menu. Josh Sawyer states the Companion Wheel offers ease of companion interaction. Such examples of companion commands include setting and changing its combat tactics, its default behavior towards foes and usage frequency of available resources. The player also receives a special perk dependent upon the companion recruited, and can have one humanoid and one non-humanoid at a time.

In New Vegas, the player can visit casinos to participate in mini-games, including blackjack, slots, and roulette. You can either win or lose money at these mini games. Designer Chris Avellone said the mini-games were done by a programmer experienced in programming non-table gaming machines. A card game called Caravan is also playable in the game.

Awesome Bro

The game still looks like shit graphically, I know that's not what this discussion thread is about, but I'm just saying, it's 2010 and the engine they use is way outdated, couldn't they use the iD engine thingy? I mean, aren't they part of the same company now?

Aaaaanyways.

So I didn't really like Fallout 3, it didn't really "move" me as much as some of the hardcore fans, maybe because the beginning few hours were too slow and you had nothing to do (I managed to last 20 hours and played the Operation Anchorage expansion, which by the way, the expansion was amazing, lol), although I did feel it getting better as I levelled up and found new places and items etc. etc.

I MIGHT get this sometime, maybe in the Christmas sales, that'll give 'em enough time to fix the majority of the glitches, I mean, it really does look better than F3, it has more colour, by the look of it more variety in terms of weapons and dare I say it... environments, yes, I've seen pictures of plantlife, I've seen greens and blues, and I've heard you can play card games (Red Dead Redemption is amazing for this), it just seems as if they've packed more into the game, and I must admit I've always loved Obsidians games, sure they've been finnicky, but they're genuinely good games.

Can anyone who's played/currently playing this, maybe give me a list of reasons why this is better than F3 or why I should buy it, without any spoilers? Because it really does look better than F3, but I wasn't really a fan of it until later in, I had to attempt to play the game from scratch three times to finally become slightly interested, lol.

New Vegas's pacing is a little bit like Fallout 3, once you're running around with flamers and rocket launchers you feel like you were kind of stupid for using a 9mm pistol even though it was all you had. I really haven't gotten a glitch, except for one body that just shot up into the air and never came down.

And as for pros, I have to say it's miles better. Largely, the series belongs in the west, it feels so out of place being in the Capital Wasteland. The whole faction ideal is so much better, plus there are cities everywhere. It doesn't feel like they're just coming out of the vaults and are helpless, the semblance of civilization is grown and taking foothold. There's less of towns fighting for survival, and now they're just fighting to just go on their normal routine day by day. The weapons feel better and there's a lot more variety in them now, the tough guys will be carrying better things, gun runners and the such. I really can't ever go back and play Fallout 3 after this, there's just so much of the world I haven't seen after 25 hours into the game.

It's quite a bit more colorful than fallout 3 to be certain. actually more than a few times, i could only say to myself "well hey this doesnt look too bad for a post-apocalyptic landscape"
i've driven the stretch between california and nevada (on the I-15) many times (irl). i've shot clay pigeons and rode dune buggies in that very desert :)
and it is very familiar

whereas the capital wasteland's scenery--the ashy, sick sky, the grey/parched ground, the huddled/cramped industrial hallways--was daunting,
the people are what makes this game's apocalypse.
people are being generally super shitty to each other here and there are sooo many ways to do everything

I can't really say what makes this better than Fallout 3, because I love them both in their own retrospect. However, if you're playing games for it's lovely graphics, you're probably better off not playing a sandbox game that allows you to make choices and go anywhere on the map. The graphics aren't really hashed upon making you dance for them, it's the game play and different experience you get depending on how you play. The only difference I can say is with New Vegas it's like a bunch of people who owned and worked in Interplay the original makers of fallout, took Bethesda's engine and made another fallout using it. I've never really played the original fallout 1 and 2 which is probably why I love 3 and NV equally.

Some of the changes I do notice besides the obvious is more choices than just choosing good or evil. Also the Sniper Rifle isn't glitched and miss every time when you're shooting far away. The Feral Ghouls are FUCKIN Scary now, not by looks, but by the sounds they make. The weapon's damage doesn't really factor on condition as much but relies more on the rarity of it and it's strengths of firepower. For example a 9mm is inferior to a 10mm pistol, but a 9mm Sub-machine gun is way better. than a 10mm pistol. Also the equipments Durability seems a lot lower in this game.

I haven't beaten the game but I got pretty close I think. But I kinda did the wrong thing that I think would make me evil but I was only following orders you know..
I gave the chip to House and I haven't killed him yet, I think he's evil but I can't really tell. He wants me to go to Boomers and get their support but I've already been there, "shits a bitch trying to get through it, now I have to figure out if they can help me.

I just created another character anyway who's gonna be purely evil but not follow anyone and kill anyone that gets in his way even
Caesar
. With his fists lol. I think the unarmed abilities sound cool, can't wait to see what special unarmed techs I can get.

After beating the game, i'm rolling an unarmed only game. The perks are few and far in between but once you're maxed in your unarmed skill, taking things on is pretty easy cause they get knocked out if you're using boxing gloves or fighting tape.

yeah, actually ... i naturally picked long range/guns skills to master early on b/c that seems to always be the way to go in bethesda-spawned engines ... but the unarmed is rather fun and next time i'm doing that.

also boone is a fucking BEAST. i have to give him a shittier weapon b/c he's stealing all my kills :O

in the orig. games, if you set the intelligence stat to 1, sometimes your dialog options will be incoherent babble (e.g. "me want!"). anyone tried that in this'n? it'd be hilarious if they re-adopted that "feature".

yeah ven, caveman dialogue is back!!

I'm absolutely loving the ambiguity and different approaches to quests. you don't have to choose one side - you can play them all off of one another, and use them all for your own ends. (although tbh I can't even force myself to do much work for the legion - going in that camp for the first time and talking to everybody as a female character is pretty creepy)

my character is a total weakling with like 3 str, 3 end, and easily crippled limbs, but because of my 9 charisma and the changes to companions I'm easily blazing through everything w/ Boone or Lily and Rex on hard.

Anski

Boone is craaaazy overpowered, but I can't use him since my unarmed character has vowed to kill everything, including the NCR.

And Boone too.

You also rack in a fortune if you're making an unarmed run, i've sold so many looted guns that I haven't been to NV yet and I already have 3000 caps.

Also the Caveman talk is back? I loved that aspect of Fallout 1 and 2, I missed it in 3 by miles and miles.

Jason

Awesome Bro

So I've got a question, are there still Energy Weapons like the Laser Rifle in New Vegas? And if so, do they still disintigrate enemies with a critical hit? Because if so that'd be nice, since I'm playing Fallout 3 at the moment, and I've just stumbled upon a super mutant without realising, and since my Luck is set to 10, I did a critical hit with my first shot and it got rid of it, not bad considering it would've only done one notch on the bar otherwise, lol.

Anski

Yeah, there are a fortune more of them since the West capitalized on them early on. Tribeams, thompson laser weapons, plus some cool plasma stuff.

Well I am pretty much doing the same thing Ernest is doing with my unarmed character, but I don't kill everything, only people that piss him off. I walked into the Luxe Casino and told the guy to blow it out his ass then proceeded to beat the crap out of him. I only had it on Normal but shit it was difficult at level 2 to defeat the whole room of idiots whacking me with canes. Not to mention the rest of them in the areas of the Luxe.
I'm also gonna try to kill Mr. House. Need to find a science book to hack the terminal. Science Skill is 55 now and I have comprehension so all i need is to find the book

Did anyone try wild wasteland? I don't know what changed about it, only difference I noted is that the first thing that attacked me when I left Goodsprings Cementry was a friggen deathclaw, dunno how I managed to escape.

Getting the power fist early on helps alot with unarmed
Mick of Mick and Ralph's sells it
Your limbs will fuck up easily especially on hardcore mode where it takes a lot more to heal them. Sleeping isn't an option. Once had my head, body and both arms crippled and walked away.

Anybody know who the unarmed trainers are besides the one in the camp behind Caesar?

I killed Benny. Just walked up to him and beat him three times in the face. Barely escaped though, he wasn't lying about the peashooter thing. I need armor with more Durability than 2. I just wish heavy armor wouldn't make you so slow

Hacking the terminal causes every bot in the strip to go against you. The Wild Wasteland perk isn't a difficulty or enemy thing, it just adds pop culture events, such as the emergency NCR radio, one of the soldiers will yell 'Game over man, Game over!' and 'They're comin out of the walls, they're comin out of the goddamn walls!' which are both from Aliens. Also Ranger Andy in Novac teaches you a neat unarmed move if you can speech convince him to do it (The req. is like 25 or something) which knocks over enemies. Naturally I used it against him.

Hovering Anomaly

Occurrence: As you close in on the area just north of Horowitz Farmstead [1.06], what looked like a Mercenary Camp from a distance turns into an extra-terrestrial landing, complete with spacecraft, and three Aliens! Defeat the Captain to take his Unique Alien Blaster.

What Is It, Boy?

Occurrence: Speak to Rex while you're out in the Mojave Wasteland. At some point, Rex will answer with an "aroo!" You then divine that Little Jimmy may have fallen into a well, the location of which is unlocked on your Pip-Boy's world map (northeast of New Vegas, right outside the wall).

A reference to the 1954 Lassie TV series, where "Timmy fell into a well" was a staple of the show, as well as a homage to the Fallout 2 quest where the Chosen One helps look for Jonny with the help of Laddie the dog.

Granny's Grannies

Occurrence: When you exit Cerulean Robotics, three elderly women named Irate Ida, Rancorous Ruth and Malefic Maude wearing Pre-War Spring Outfits and armed with rolling pins will attack you.

This is a reference to a Monty Python sketch[1] named Hell's Grannies.

We Named the Dog Indiana

Occurrence: A battered fridge appears in the Mojave Wasteland; it looks like it has survived a devastating blast, but the occupant has not; the skeletal remains of an adventurer are inside, along with his Suave gambler hat. No snakes, thankfully.

Location: Just after the final bend in the road going south east from Goodsprings to Jean Sky Diving. It's on the left (North) side of the road.

Reference to the scene from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, where Indy avoids a nuclear blast by hiding in a lead-lined refrigerator.

Getting Too Close

Occurrence: During Side Quest: I Put a Spell on You, if you unwittingly divulge to Captain Curtis that you know a mole is using the Control Tower during the night and then stake it out, he ambushes you there. Right before the ambush occurs, Curtis says "You're getting too close, Seamus!". Reference to Carmen Sandiego

R.O.U.S.

Occurrence: You may not think they exist, but in certain underground locations, such as the New Vegas Sewers, the Broc Flower Cave, or Vaults with peeling election posters, are rats one-and-a-half to two-times bigger than normal. These are Rodents of Unusual Size.

This is a reference to the movie "The Princess Bride" and the R.O.U.S.s that inhabit the Fire Swamp.

Owen and Beru

Located in Nipton there are two corpses. One looks to be a male human, while the other is female, lying next to each other. They look like they've been charred. Alas, there's no power converter to loot

This is a reference to Star Wars IV, where Luke Skywalker's uncle and aunt are burnt and their charred corpses' can be seen.

Holy Hand Grenades

Occurrence: Somewhere, in a place where two spires once shot forth skyward, is a basement with a box of Holy Hand Grenades to utilize. There is a sign on the box that reads "Holy Hand Grenades. Pull pin, count to five [scratched out]... 3, and throw." This is a reference to The Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and they also appeared in Fallout 2.

In Fallout: New Vegas they can be found in the basement in one of the churches in Camp Searchlight.

Romanes Eunt Domus

Occurrence: Scrawled on a concrete building in Cottonwood Cove, some upstart has scrawled the graffiti "Romanes Eunt Domus", Which translated means "People called Romanes they go in the house."

This is a reference to Monty Python's Life of Brian where Brian is writing graffiti on the palace wall and uses the same incorrect conjugation, trying to write "Romans go home"

Crusoe Sucks as an Investigator

Occurrence: During Side Quest: Beyond the Beef, a dead investigator is discovered inside an Ulta-Luxe hotel room. Further investigation of this crime-scene reveals his name to be "Crusoe," with a shock of red hair, sunglasses and a business suit.

This is a reference to CSI: Miami. The main character Lt. Horatio Caine is played by David Caruso, and to the Pink Panther detective: Inspector Clouseau.

The Future of Law Enforcement

Occurrence: While listening to the Securitrons interact with the visitors to The Strip, you swore you heard one state "your move, creep." Should you frame Heck Gunderson during Side Quest: Beyond the Beef, the arresting Securitron may have no preference over Heck's life; he's still going with him.

This is a Reference to the 1980s film Robo-cop, when he confronts a criminal.

Stay Classy, Mr. New Vegas

Occurrence: Mr. New Vegas sometimes introduces his music with: "You know, I tried to measure my charisma on a Vit-o-matic Vigor Tester once. The machine burst into flames." The sweet-talking doesn't end there either. He has a special news sign-off, and some home truths about the Mojave.

This is a reference to the movie "Anchorman".

The Big One

Occurrence: Slightly north-west of the Devil's Throat is a large, unexploded bomb known as The Big One. Amid the crackle of your Geiger counter, you can open up the bomb, and scavenge some Energy Weapon ammunition, if you can stand the Glowing One and Super Mutant attacks.

This is a reference to Sid's firework that is used to "blast off" Buzz Lightyear.

Johnny Five-Aces

Occurrence: During Barton Thorn's quest, you're instructed to investigate an overlook south of Goodsprings. There's a dead Prospector up here named Johnny, wearing glasses, with a glass pitcher next to him, and five aces on the table. On the cliff are four balls in a line.

This is a reference to a failed game project, Zybourne Clock, which started on the Something Awful forums. It was ridiculed and became kind of a meme on the forums.

Game Over Man, Game Over!

Occurrence: If you're listening to the NCR Emergency Radio during the final battle for Hoover Dam, among the chatter about positioning snipers and reinforcing positions you may hear lines such as "They're coming out of the damn walls!" or "Game over, man!"

Also fffff there need to be wayyy more Black Widow/Lady Killer/etc events >:V

id tech 5 can't do openworld or day/night cycles.

this game has the best audio/music design of any game ever made. the writing and quests are good too. also the world feels a lot more natural and alive. the graphics are good enough, fuck off.

fallout > new vegas > fallout 3 > fallout 2.

yeah the sound design is pretty impressive. i wish the radio had a few more songs, but there is a great variety of them in there, including cash and sinatra. even when the radio's off, the ambient music & noise is pretty great.

my only complaint in regards to the graphics are that a number of textures and models were recycled from vanilla fallout 3 (and i had gotten used to f3 being modded to feature hi-res shit so it was off-putting at first). the new stuff--like the geckos, major characters, special secret weapons, etc--were re-skinned with higher-res textures ... So it doesn't look totally congruent.

the modding community has already started in with new stuff though.
http://newvegasnexus.com/
so soon enough i'll be getting my high-res texture packs back.

you can't really fault it too much graphically considering the amount of content available in any given draw distance.

i agree that they could have put in more effort there.
but a fun game is a fun game

God the Wild Wasteland perk brings back the comedy of Fallout 1 and 2. 3 had GAAAARRRYYYYYY but not much past that.

Also, I kept the radio off after I got sick of hea-

Oh i've got spurs that jingle jangle jingle~!

I mean, the music is nice, and i'm super glad they managed to secure Dino's classic Kick in the Head, but after a while the selection seems even more limited than F3's. Naturally i'm converting the four radio station mods I made for F3 and probably adding a new one of the more rock and roll country, stuff like Ghost Riders in the Sky, Johnny Cash, The Highwaymen etc.

as i walked out in the streets of new reno
as i walked out in new reno one day
i spied a young cowboy all wrapped in white linen
wrapped in white linen and cold as the clay

oh beat the drum slowly and play the fife lowly
play the dead march as you bear me along
take me to the valley and lay the sod o'er me
i'm a young cowboy i know i've done wrong

i see by your outfit that you are a cowboy
these words he did say as i slowly walked by
come sit down beside me and hear my sad story
i'm shot in the chest and today i must die

go bring me a cup, a cup of cold water
to cool my parched lips the cowboy then said
before i returned his soul had departed
and gone to the round-up, the cowboy was dead

oh beat the drum slowly and play the fife lowly
play the dead march as you bear me along
take me to the valley and lay the sod o'er me
for i'm a young cowboy i know i've done wrong~

then i had sex with everybody because fallout 2 is a big dick joke XD

also yeah i'm waiting for high-res texture mods too. i also hope someone releases an SSAO mod that doesn't use enbseries because that shit's slow as fuck. if you have an nvidia card i THINK you can enable SSAO yourself (since Fallout 3 supports it natively on nvidia cards but idk about ati cards) by shitting around in the nvidia control panel.
