Eternal Sonata

I own it for 360 and although I haven't been able to play much of it (only on chapter...6?), it is definitely a treat.  The battle system is one of the most fun I've played in an RPG in ages.  It's kind of a strange mix of turn based, tactical, and action--you really kind of have to play it to see what I mean.  Although the story is kind of meh, the voice acting is wonderful (especially Chopin's voice) and the graphics are lovely.  I shouldn't need to say that the music and sound in general is mesmerizing; it's the only time I've ever just pushed buttons in the menu because the chiming sound effects were so entrancing.  The game isn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but it's really worth a play.

Another interesting facet of the battle system is that it actually gets more complex as you advance.  Once you reach a certain 'battle level' (determined by beating a certain boss), the battle system removes some of the training wheels and rewards you with new complexities (you might have less time per turn, but now you can string together combos, to give an example).  It's a lot of fun.

i played the demo on a friend's ps3 for like 2 minutes and was bored as hell. i probably shouldn't have expected anything from what looks to be your generic jrpg.

I like a solid by the book JRPG now and again as much as I like an innovative and fresh experience too.  This is obviously the best next gen jrpg at the moment so it's on my list.  I too found the battle system to be very good and thankgod alot more challenging for once, though this is only on the ps3 version, apparently the xbox version is pretty easy.  I'm a sucker for this games vivid environments.

it was confusing all that happened was slashing at the air i couldn't figure out how to attack the enemies

o_O all you gotta do is run up to them and if im correct it's x to do a normal attack and triangle to do the special. you have a certain amount of time to do whatever you like. what i usually do is mash the x button until the last second and then unleash my special attack. i especially like how during the enemies turn you can press circle at the right time to guard an attack and take slightly less damage.

oh what you can actually MOVE? that's pretty cool!!

i guess you werent payin attention

of course i wasn't paying attention. everything about the game looked like a generic jrpg so i assumed the battles would just be menu-based

even if the battle system is amazing though everything else looked so boring (oh wow a nice green forest with chests along incredibly linear paths!) that i doubt i'm even going to go back and try it again.
