Lately I've been really hating me some jRPGs, but this latest Namco-Bandai deal I think is worth a look. It's by the dudes behind Baten-Kaitos. It's coming out for all the systems, I think?
Now, first, it follows all the typical jRPG stereotypes:
- Lead character is a precocious teenage boy
- Secondary lead is a blonde teen female good at magic
- Someone else in the party is a young child /)
- Names are quirky and silly (Polka, Allegretto, Beat)
- Features a typical "Urrr, bad guy beat down pretty time village >8O" storyline
- Characters have ultra cutesy anime time faces
But what's neat about it is that:
- It's centered around Chopin, or rather, his vision of a fairytale world inspired from his music on his deathbed (Tuberculosis).
- Everything is based off his musical works, from names, to chapters and their influences, to characters.
- The battle system is hugely fun and interesting, from the demo I played. And it actually has some challenge to it.
- NO RANDOM ENCOUNTERS
But, most of all, and I want to emphasize this.
>>>THIS GAME IS FUCKING BEAUTIFUL<<<
It's not necessarily the most graphically-advanced, in that the polygons in the environment aren't SUPER smooth, but the colors and textures are absolutely knock-your-socks-off gorgeous.
Actually those screenshots don't do it justice. It's absolutely fantastically gorgeous. Half my enjoyment of the demo was derived from looking at it.
So anyway, I think I'mma rent it. What do you cats think?
