There are many forms of escapism. In fact, anything can become an escape from reality. Some people say that it's a bad thing to seek escapism, that people should deal with their problems instead of running from them.
However, as I see it, some problems cannot be solved. It's a misconception that I blame on Disney that if people just try hard enough, then they can do anything. That if you just believe in yourself, some mystical force will guide your way and make everything better. Well, that's simply not true. Sometimes things don't get better, and you don't have any control over it. If you can solve any issue by 'trying hard', then if your problems don't go away, it's obviously just because you're not trying hard enough. You're obviously a faliure. "What's the point in escapism? Why don't you just deal with your problems. You're obviously not doing it right. You're obviously just not good enough". Some people act as if it's the fault of the victim that they have problems. But how often is that actually true? Sometimes there's nothing you can do. And at that time, is it better to sit brooding over it, or is it better to take your mind off it, to move on?
In the Matrix, they were happy on the inside. What difference did it make that their bodies were inside machines?
