Epic Feudal Japan/China pixel remake (for Hk's)

I'll be posting updates for the refurbishing of this tileset http://www.rmxp.org/forums/showthread.php?t=7505: here =)

These are the rough linework for the roof tops (Pay no mind to the fruity colors, they're just temporary .They help me in ways I can't explain) As you can see I have both rooftop types here. I edited the second so that you can tile it vertically or horizontally to give the tileset a little more freedom.

Theres also A diagram of how you'll be able to tile them once they're done.

They need alot of tuning up but At least I finally got the basic structure down ^_^; I still have a ways to go though. So stay tuned =)

Even though they're temporary the bright colours throw it off : /

But once they're started they should look right.
Good luck :)

I dont think the intention was realism. His templates dont have noses or mouths, SK isnt a heavy realist. ;)

Yep =). C'mon guys, this is just an exact makeover of an established tileset , It says so in the very first line ^_^;. I have no intention on making it realistic because then I'd have to think, and I already have a couple original tilesets in the works. Maybe some other time.

Besides as Ryan said I'm more of an artist than a realist. Even if I do decide to make a realistic Japanese structure I'd still take creative liberties with it. Afterall most my work is based in fictional worlds. If you're looking for a realistic Japanese tileset though, I think Mac has made one.

It's not too shabby, but it is lacking in the roof department. I'd probably do a remake some day or a bg time overhaul..maybe..maybe not =/. I believe Tana has resized that for HK's too...

I'm not a real fan of the culture or style- probably because "Japan" is being so overused these days. I'd love it if your talent was put to use on a more neutral or generic tileset that could really be used by more people than the anime fans.

That said, it does look like an incredible start. I really like what you're doing with the horn things- it looks like it'll add a great touch.

And believe it or not, I actually think I do understand the colored lineart. Neat.

Okay, I understand a little better where you're coming from now. Besides, with a pallatte change, the Epic Feudal set could still be workable in a more traditional setting. Still looking forward to this set. ^^

When I first saw the tileset I knew it wasn't normal. Sure it can't be used for "Generic town # 999 " But I didn't see it as such. If anything this place is mystical or special in some way. Maybe an evil palace? A city of japanese themed demons? Or even a hiden city of some evil ninja cult. The fact that people are actually pushing for mediocrity bothers me ^_^;. Since when has it become a sin to be creative around here? I must have been gone longer than I thought.

Ah well. Forget it, I'll just finish this on my own time for myself. If it's a waste of time and no one is gonna need or use it , then I'd rather waste my time for personal gain lol .

thanks for the input! =)

@Kaizer: I just thought if you're going for a feudal Japan house (which sounds very specific/accurate), you could do it semi-realistic, too... Well, it'll look better in RMXP games without a deadly serious theme the way you do it now, but for my game (i.e.), it'd be better to have realistic tiles... but the tilesets you linked is amazing... too bad there are no roofs XD

So you think that all games featuring Japanese houses (it doesn't even have to be something with Japanese environment, just the rooftop...) are Anime games? That's a very narrow-minded POV... if you look at my game, you (well, maybe) will see that it doesn't have to be like that. Also, I haven't seen a single game with a Japanese theme on RMXP, so...

I only said "Epic feudal japanese tileset" Because that was the name of the topic in which Ryanwh posted the tileset I'm referencing to make this. In fact, parts of it is actually Chinese if you look at it. Similar to Cortez I could care less about the culture (no offense at all, it's just not my preference.) . I just think it looks cool =). What I'm aiming for is what the original tileset looked like to me: spooky , evil, mystical and almost haunted . Well thats how I saw it anyways (RTP bits aside)

Anyways It took a bit of doing but I finished and ceaned up the linework for the rooftops:

The roof is the hardest part from what I can see. Drawing everything else should be cheescake...

They are gonna be sooo awesome :) /fan

I almost want to try colouring them myself, just to get back into it, but too much work means no play me with lines :'(

Please do release them.... I would like to use them in my game... It may just be (with a tiny edit) the perfect tileset for my Mage conspiracy to have its evil hideout.

If you do decide to release these publicly, I can so see these being used for Otogakure (The Hidden Sound Village) or Kumo (The Hidden Cloud Village) in my Naruto fangame...

As for people "pushing for mediocrity", I don't think it's bad or not understandable. Most artists want to make tilesets to see them used a lot, and therefore, people give comments to try to make the sets more flexible and easily used. Not often that you meet someone who's just a real, honest-to-goodness artist, who really wants to make something to their own liking and damned if anyone else wants to use it or not! :D

Actually SK the author is Chinese, so its probably completely Chinese oriented. However people tend to associate the feudal architecture more with Japan since they kept it alive up through the 19th century.

But yeah, the specifics arent terribly relevent since typically villages like this are in fantasy games just for the sake of looking unique from other villages. You know "europe town, russia town, Middleeastern town, Oriental town, etc." They're gold standards, and being primarily featured in fantasy games or at least ones with fantasy elements they have NO obligation to be completely accurate.

Most of the Japanese culture has been carried over from China, most of the time improved further (resulted in the Chinese were envious about the Japanese Katana, for example). Very few things actually originated in Japan.

I actually read a very interesting article about Heian Japan, and how the Japanese believed that their architecture was based on the kinds of things Chinese royalty would've had. When the Chinese actually came to Heian-kyo (modern day Kyoto), it probably struck them the same as if you went to Las Vegas; the Japanese expected them to be right at home, but it was far more extravagant than what they were used to.

Pretty good so far SK
The onlything so far I don't like are the faces ontop of the roofs... they seem a bit too straight on...

I can give you a bit more thoughts about the set later too... Been awhile since I've looked at the one Ryan posted.
