Enough Remakes

Am I the only one getting tired of developers just re-making their game over and over again instead making new ones and actually improving them? Yes, I'm looking at you Square Enix. The turn based battle systems don't get any better with 3D graphics. I want to see someting new!

Discuss ;) And I hope there isn't already a topic about this ':|

Well actually they don't just remake the battle system, they make it better every game.

A big example would be that of FF12, instead of just going to a different screen they made that a real time battle system. Lets not forget the Espers/Aeons/GF's/summons they tend to sway the battle.

FF7 also had the materia system which I liked...

Anyway to sum up what I'm saying- they try to change the battle system for better every game.

I think he was talking about the fact that the original Final Fantasy has been released on four different consoles along with several other ff games, not the fact that the battle system is different for every final fantasy game.

Heres a run down of most ff game releases over the years:

Final Fantasy - NES/Famicom, PS1, GBA, PSP
Final Fantasy II - Famicom, PS1, GBA, PSP
Final Fantasy III - Famicom, NDS
Final Fantasy IV (II US) - SNES/Super Famicom, PS1, GBA,
Final Fantasy V - Super Famicom, PS1, GBA
Final Fantasy VI (III US)- SNES/Super Famicom, PS1, GBA
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest/US - SNES/Super Famicom
Final Fantasy VII - PS1, PC
Final Fantasy VIII - PS1, PC
Final Fantasy IX - PS1, ?PC?
Final Fantasy Tactics - PS1, PSP
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance - GBA
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles - GCN w/GBA
Final Fantasy X - PS2
Final Fantasy X-2 - PS2
Final Fantasy XI (and all Expansion Packs) - PS2, PC
Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII - PS2
Final Fantasy XII - PS2
Final Fantasy XII: Revanent Wings - NDS
Final Fantasy XIII - PS3
Final Fantasy Versus XIII - PS3
Final Fantasy Agito XIII - Mobile
Final Fantasy: Dissidia - ?PSP?

Granted I may have missed a few, but that is most of them. These are the individual games, not the collectors' packs that had two games for the PS1

Well FF III remake is sure one heck of a game :) They don't just give it a better graphic but improve many aspects of the game (special features, secrets that can be unlocked, new systems) It sure give me a nostalgic feeling. I might be bias here because FF III is my first RPG game I've ever played, and I was 7 - 9 when I played this game.

But as for FF 12...I don't want to count that as a remake. More like a special or bonus version like those singers in Thailand usually do with their albums. All the songs are the same but they add just one or two bonus tracks with new CD cover.

As far as I know, there will be new systems in FF IV too. And this game I played it so many times on SFC that I can't wait to try it on NDS :)

So basically...I don't mind remakes, if the games are worth remade. And I enjoy FF III remake more than FF 8...lol .I don't like the special or bunus version like international version of FFX or FFX-2 that it's basically the same game with some extra new stuffs :(

If you want to see something new, try Subarashiki konosekai ~It's A Wonderful World~. It's a new (well, quite old now, I guess) rpg game on NDS that is so stylish and very very unique from the other traditional rpg game. Or you can wait for Final Fantasy Tactic A2 too :)
Square Enix right now is also working on new 3 Kingdom Hearts game, which are Kingdom Heart Coded, Kingdom Heart 358/2 days and Kingdom Heart Birth By Sleep. The three games will be for mobile phone, NDS and PSP repectively. What a way to sell their games...

They need to just stop with remakes and ports period. It's annoying, and it's insulting. The sad thing is, people will still buy it because it has SE on the label and says 'Final Fantasy.' They could put Square Enix on to anything, and it would sell. If you took the labels off, I'd imagine that any FF would sell like Xenosaga(more deserving series, IMO).

They need to stop thinking about spinoffs and redos, and instead, take that thought and put it into something unique.

I don't mind remakes.
They tend to do them when nothing else is planned for release at that time, and really don't hinder the release of the new projects. It allows us old timers to play old games again, and it allows new timers to get introduced to some classics.

Not to mention both being able to play the proper game for once. Look at FF4. There are 2 japanese FF4's, "hard type" and "easy type". FF2 was "easy type" which was watered down and had several elements removed. So now, we get FF4 again, which is fine. I get to play the full game once more... now if I hadn't played an illegal rom, I would never have known the true state of the game.

Same with FFT. That's coming our way again (or has it already?) with proper translation?

Plus they all make money, and they usually tend to add to the game - even if purists see it as "evil".

EDIT:
Movies/TV things like that... unless your adding to an original with deleted scenes I don't need it, I don't want it, I best not see it.

Now that Wii has the "Virtual Console", it is unlikely that we will see any remakes of anything SNES and before. Except for things such as FF3 and FF4DS, which aren't just ports but entire remakes which completely change the game. I have nothing against them remaking FF5 and FF6 in 3D like FF3/4, as long as they don't use the same ugly models as FF4DS.

wouldn't the virtual console only stop nintendo from remaking? wouldn't that have no effect on 3rd party games?

I dunno, some games were cool ideas, but I'd much rather play a sequel like remake, a full on remake, or even a hasher as opposed to the same game i was slightly disappointed with in the 3rd grade.

It's good to be able to play the old Final Fantays and I completely understand FF3 being re-made because it was never relased here. Not to mention the whole 3D overhaul. However... It did lave me a bit dissapointed. Well I wasn't too surprised after the reviews I read about it being aimed at hardcore oldschool RPG fans. And it is only FF3.

I would just rather see something new and exciting. Change it up a bit. I think it's just a stage I'm going through, because I'm getting a little tired of the basic RPG formula.

If it doesn't impeed on the development of new games then its probably fine. But what would everyone's opinion be about a (much talked about) FF7 remake for the PS3?

(Crap I even manage to post this in the wrong forumm... hehe, mods?)

i thought you did, but purposely inputted a note on movies to cover up for ya...

if ff7 is remade i'm done with square. That's just whoring out an old horse one too many times, especially since I really wouldn't call it "old enough" to warrant a remake personally. I don't think ps1 games should be remade yet... unless it's thrown in as a collection.

and as a note, did some looking, and most remakes in squaresoft at least are handled by 2nd teir guys. sort of a testing ground to see what potentials there are. FF4 was anyway, used to test a few people to see how well they could work out with the group. But it's probably a lie. Boo.

I personally believe Square-Enix is one of those companies that sadly puts loads of effort into some games and just not enough into others. They're to put it simply, lazy!

For example:

Final Fantasy III - DS Edition, upgraded the graphics and the story and the systems but to be honest it could have done a little more here and there. Perhaps something like a Limit break or an ATB bar would have been nice, because I felt the battles were a little simplistic. Entertaining game good as a starter point but they seemed to get a little lazy when fine tuning the game.

By the looks of things Final Fantasy IV appears to be improving on the aspects III failed in. Voice acting comes, FMVs, greater plot. However seeing the FMVs it makes you wonder, couldn't they at least make the graphics FF8's standard or even Crisis Core Standard. It does make me question them.

Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII - Not really a remake but you get the idea, the plot was good, if a little short willed. But the gameplay was a little poor, the game didn't revisit old locations enough and whilst Vincent is a really cool character and all, they simply didn't use the Final Fantasy VII universe to it's best advantage, they could have included Cloud a little more than just at the end. The same goes for Advent Children they could have made this longer, like feature length not like the pilot of a TV Series like it seemed. It's conclusion was great but characters like Barrett and Cid had like 3 lines the whole film and could have been explored a little more. Even if their stories weren't integral to the plot as such, that's what makes a good film, character development. I mean, Marlene was featured more in the movie than her damn Dad/Uncle.

Crisis Core - On the other hand we've got Crisis Core, from what I've played and seen of it, it seems to be everything that was good about Dirge of Cerberus, and gets all the things it got wrong, right! It seems like a well rounded good prequel game that is entertaining and not just a story we all knew already either. I'm looking forward to this alot!

The remake's that piss me off however are the million remakes they've done of the first two Final Fantasies.

I mean I'm all for 2D RPGs but when you're making FF3 and FF4 in 3D, why release just a minor graphical update AGAIN!!! I mean seriously!

My point in the end is, that they're making all these remakes that have great potential but they end up just being ports to other consoles with minor graphical updates that people really couldn't give two shits about! I mean the only thing I'm looking forward to about FF 1 + 2 on the PSP is the rips people will get from graphical animations to put on RPG Maker Games!

Square-Enix has gotten lazy to put it blunt! They have the potential to be great, but they're stretching themselves too far and not giving people what they want. FF12, great gameplay but boring as hell in but the stories and the constant running around without a single puzzzle, the dungeons were just one giant maze every single time, sometimes not even a maze!!

Anyways... That's all...

Final Fantasy Origins was a rerelease of the original games which is why they were all hardcore and shit.

Dawn of Souls was the stupid wonderswan remake and removed all the original elements like Dungeons and Dragons style spell slots and some battle options like losing your turn if an enemy died.

Then they remade the graphics in a higher resolution for the PSP version.

Next they'll remake the entire game but leave everything the same so it'll still be the steaming pile of 20 year old garbage that it is.

i love u squeenix

I don't mind remakes of games so much. But why the hell is Hollywood lapping up the rights to deface well-known horror franchises?

Child's Play remake by 2015 (roughly estimated). Sigh.

I don't mind IF it's a really old, and rare game. Seriously, 4 remakes/ports of 1game (FF1) is just ridiculous. And what's really sad is that some people will by 2 or 3 of the same game, for really no reason.

I feel this way with Resident Evil. However, I do like where Silent Hill is going, so I have some faith in Hollywood still.

I have doubts that the Final Fantasy games have a very high production value. It doesn’t help that they’re such a bigheaded company and give estimated dates of release which forces them to rush certain aspects of the newer games which in the long run bites them in the arse (Think X-2 which oddly enough had a FF5 meets FFX feel to it).

I didn't really read through thoroughly to see if anyone mentioned this. But if you take a look at The Last Remnant, probably the most original and unique system from Square in awhile. It looks to be quite the game.
