eharper's Graphics Workshop [Graphics Heavy!]

The heads are a bit big and it makes the bodies look small. Also, if you like the way the heads look, it would also help if you made the legs a little longer. But I can't draw much better so maybe I shouldn't be giving advice. :D (I can tell when anatomy's good though) But excellent edits on the Naramura battlers. My project has a similar class change system and I'm using Naramura, but so far I've just done head swaps and recolors. The one for Hecate is very well done. However, on Jeanette it looks like you cut the tip off one of the pieces of hair. (The original battler does look like a psycho, though. I agree with you there)

Yah, its a preportions thing. I thought as much. You're quite right about me and my big heads syndrome. I don't tend to notice, though. I'm sure I wrote somewhere else in this topic that I become very bias when considering my pencil sketches; and just don't end up noticing the defects. I do have other preliminary sketches in the works (Hecate was the first one of such), but I doubt I'll ever totally arrest my issues in that department. So, uh, think of it as a Stylistic choice...eheh...

As for Jeanettes missing hair, that would be the top-right corner, yes? I noticed that a while ago, and its been fixed, but thanks anyway for pointing it out. The progression charts are now actually missing a couple of changes like that (Risa's Ponytail was shortened to match her sprite better, and the odd white streak was removed. Fortinbras has had a considerable makeover, making him look less goofy. I've given everyone unique weapon sprites. Elijah got marginally longer hair. Stuff like that.)

In fact, I'll update the progression charts later.

EDIT: There we go. All updated. I'll post em here too. This is just a cut and paste jobby, mind you.

Jeanette
J-Prog-chart-New.png

Revised 17/06/08. I was unhappy with Jeanette's old sprites, so she's had the most change of all, so far. Those whom have played the demo will notice her base Druid sprite has been altered, giving her much more battleready look, rather than the 'heehee, I've got a dagger' psycho look she had before. I'm quite satisfied with them now, though. I even got rid of some her errant curly hair gone pixellated.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tomlyn
T-Prog-chart-New.png

Revised 17/06/08. Tomlyn has had much less change, though the Monk sprite is totally new, and the Paladin has gone through a couple of revisions. I'm not entirely sure about the Bishops staff; it might need rotating a bit. Also, since its not keeping with the others, I'm wondering whether or not to give the monk the bronze cross as well. The Sage also doesn't typically wield the staff until later in the game, but I've made him have one here for completeness sake.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Risa
R-Prog-chart-New.png

Revised 17/06/08. The Guardian sprite was previously the Cavalier, but I made a new, more appropriate Cavalier sprite (seeing as how getting this class ingame requires Risa to become Fortinbras' squire, I used a couple of parts from him and made them female sized). Though its a little smaller than the others, I do still like it, especially with the casual poleax slung over the shoulder look shes sporting. I redid the Ranger. This is her bow armed pose, as can be seen, but she can also continue to use spears and javelins as a ranger.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fortinbras
F-Prog-chart-New.png

Revised 17/06/08. Fortinbras has had a total facelift, since I always thought had a weird crunched face before. I also no longer have to get irate about him not holding his shield up. The Knight Paragon properly looks like a 'knight in shining armour' stereotype now, mind, ROFL. But that forms an excellent contrast to the dark looking Duelist, so its all good. Speaking of the Duelist, I totally modified that too, and gave him a Katana by default (since that vicious looking Scimitar he had before is now used by Triela, and hey, being a Duelist means he gets trained by the Samurai of Tuskuru, so its correct.)

Ah yeah, I think I mentioned I was doing more Animations. Well, here's Jeanettes revised animations:
NewJeanetteBattleAnims.png

Since she had the most basic set before, and I was impressed with how well Risa's revised stuff turned out, I decided to rehash hers too and give her more jumpy-ness. In game, the animation sequence is 6>3>4>5>Repeat>6>1>Leap to Right>3>4>5>2 for Jump back, making for a total of 3 knife stabs. It looks cool. The mace is similar, but only goes for 2 clonks. The staff works a bit like Risa's Javelins; in that it replaces herself for the animation, she stands, hair and cape blowing around, and channels ether along the staff (sparklies!) shooting off some Magic Missiles.

EDIT: Ah yeah, and you can spot the test frame for the Loremistress in there too. I made these anims more friendly for my eventual other class versions, since the body and cape and legs and such are all on individual layers for easier replacement. Though I did have to group layers this time (if I didn't they're be like a list of 50+ seperate layers )

What's this, an update!? Yeah, blame 4th ed D&D and Romancing Saga 3 for eating away at my spare time.

Triela Mizunoshi's and Princess Hecate's Sets
TrielaHecateBattleAnims.png

But anyhow, here I go again with new material. This is the long awaited (for me) animation sets for Triela and Hecate. Triela is primarily in the prologue at the moment, but can also join the party now temporarily in Chapter 6; and has a sidequest involving her. And, like many prominent characters, you can pair her up with the main player characters. Same with Hecate. After the cliche princess rescue scenario turns on its head (She saves the party, actually) she then joins for most of Chapter 5. And again, its probable you can add her again during Chapter 6 or 7.

As for the actual animations, Triela has a sort of blurring samurai slash which accompanies her dashing kind of attack. Which is befitting, considering her dad is from Tuskuru (the 'Japanese' country on my world). Hecate has a far less subtle leaping cleave followed by a secondary right follow up. Which also befits her and the legendary 'Hecate Smash!' (usually to her father, the king).

The only thing that concerns me about these is that Hecate's 3rd and 4th frames (the leap) might make her look bodiless (need to show more leg in them, perhaps?  ... saucy!)

Aha, here's something else I've been meaning to do for awhile; redoing Jeanettes base sprite to more match the other guys. (and to more match my concept sketches)
Jeanette-battle3.png

Because, hey, her face was also squashed before, like Fortinbras', in my opinion. Because of that it was difficult to edit her eyes to match the others. So I basically rebuilt her from scratch. The legs are basically the same, as are bits of hair, but almost everything else is new. The scarf has been made much smaller so you can actually see her chest (again, saucy!). The shoulderpads of a different design, matching her sketch version. She has shorter, puffier sleeves, again to match the sketch. The hanging decorative waist thing has also reduced in size. The cape is less billowing. Her face is bigger with less hair covering it. So alot of alterations...really...

I might still alter a couple of extra things with it though...I can instantly see a few errant pixels already, heh...

Of course, redoing this means I need to redo all of her promotion and weapon battlers too and place the new head into them (sigh...) at least. But oh well, it'll be worth the effort.

And here's Jeanettes updated progression chart now I've redone all her sprites with the new head and shoulders.
J-Prog-chart-New.png

The other images should have updated too.

Also made an Aqua Hydra:
JimAquaHydra.png

Isn't he cute!!?

As you might tell, I modded the RTP hydra, removing the extra heads that seemed to come from nowhere, removed his acne problem, changed his colour scheme, and made him look a little slick with water.

And here we have a New Risa Sketch which I just scanned in:
New-Risa-Sketch.jpg

She looks kinda scary, smiling with a halberd over her back and all...

Speaking of which, that halberd looks a little short, but oh well. Still a good 6 foot, I guess, since its about her height.

And yeah, probably still a little bit dwarf-ish, as seems to be common in my pencil sketching. But as usual, I like it (damned bias, eh?).

Any comments, by and the by? (on anything!)

Just 'ugly' isn't very constructive, Larynni, no... -_-'

But I suppose this is an unfortunate danger of pixel art...

Well, at least it is for a spriter of my caliber. I mean, the Naramura stuff is usually resized from something much bigger (and hence more detailed) wheras I work on this scale by default. I suppose I could try that, actually, see what happens. That is, make a big sprite and then resize it. If only Photoshop didn't filter when it resized stuff...it can really blur a non-vectored image doing that...which can really screw up pixel art.

Thanks anyway for the comment...

Five months since I posted any new content here, Jeez!!

Anyways, I shall necropost my topic with...new sprites for my scorpions and Deveena!

JimAlphaScorpion.png
Deveena-1.png

I always figured the base scorpion was actually a bit camp looking and just looked like he wanted to play scissors with you, so I tried here to make him look a bit more threatening, like you could lose a limb to those pincers. This particular one is the Alpha Scorpion. You can tell because it has yellow highlights for its tail and stuff.

Deveena's sprite always looked a little strange too, because she had blue lips in the original Naramura version. This was obviously because of the blue lipstick, when you looked at the large version of the sprite, but in the battler version, it just looked...odd. So her entire head, face and hair were reconstructed. I gave her a ribbon, which is present on her sprite, and also redid the hand which looked wierd. Oh, and the wings were re-done too.

Oh yeah, if you've not played...who's Deveena? She's one of the ~slightly~ psychotic villians. Which I shall prove with this screencap of some of her choice quotes from the end of chapter II...
Scary-Deveena.jpg

When I originally played the game, I remember Deveena scowling and looking angry a lot. In the screens she just looks a little - well - happy.

Indeed.

I thought it was scarier for her to look happy whilst saying these audacious things... more psycho, if you understand my meaning. She was never meant to be disgruntled or pissed, but rather a total lunatic, but I guess earlier versions of her communicated the former, rather than the latter.

Well, the thought was she'd be more concentrated in battle.

Though insane, she's still a master of Thunder Etherweaving. She would be...its her main source of power and all...

"To be granted moments of clarity only when you strike others down" Well, something like that, I guess... :smoke:

EDIT: Gave the portraits a good edit, ironing out all of the little bits and bobs that didn't look right. Check 'em out!

Still need to do Prince Elijah and Triela.

Also added them to the initial posts.

Ridiculous Ressurection go!

Well, after a five month hiatus working on other projects, I've finally returned to T.E.W. recently. Of course, the long hiatus was partly because I lost a chunk of stuff in a hard drive crash that killed my old laptop. Straight afterwards I didn't really have the inclination to continue (not to mention work decided it was a good time to increase my hours).

I'm not sure if anyone else still cares about my game, but hey, its mainly for my amusement anyways.

Anyway, in a fit of lunacy, I decided to re-do Fortinbras' animations yet again. Check it out:
Fortinbras-BattleAnimSwordsNEW.png

He's a bit less, uh, 'static' than before. Probably having a 3 quarter perspective helps a bit in this regard rather than the old chase camera (which works well for Tomlyn's holy strike attack, but less so for Fortinbras.)

I keep meaning to do Prince Elijah's animation but getting sidetracked (sigh).

Anyway, at the powered rate I'm seem to be going, I may update the actual game topic soon.
