Well, when it's a proper meal it's kind of necessary to have a bread knife, salad fork, soup spoon, main meal fork and a meat/fish knife depending on what you're having.
I'd like an example when it's necessary to use all of that stuff, and define "proper meal".

Well that would be the evening or weekend meal, or when entertaining guests - in a meal when one has meat or fish, soup, salad and a side of bread and butter. :)

A proper meal? Well, you know... "a proper meal". Cooked in the oven. Meat and 2veg, that sort of thing.

Actually I find it quite necessary

Spoon - for soup (what else are you going to use)
Salad Fork - I doubt that balsamic vinaigrette goes well with my pork chops :\
Fork
Knife - I find it much easier than using my fork to cut,
it varies from typical to highly serrated depending on the dish
(cause you need more cutting power for steak then you need for pork chops)

See its not that difficult, lazy people - there's only four utensils
(at my house the bread is cut in the kitchen so we have no need for a bread/butter knife)
Furthermore since the soup is the first course and is separated from the main meal,
so you only really have 3 utensils at a time - an they're there for a reason

And this is the typical setup for any meal at my house,
The festivity of a meal is decided by the festivity of the dish(es) not by the amount of utensils

Also Incognitus your definition of a "proper meal" is actually a typical main course at my house,
and in theory could be eaten with just a fork (I like my knife though)

but then again I'm an old-age mainland European, what do I know?

I wouldn't even know what a salad fork was if it was right under my nose.

Every dinner time I set out a knife, fork, and spoon, but only end up using the fork. I always eat with the fork "upside down", sometimes using the knife to push food onto it; but all the same I wouldn't think any more or less of a person by the way they ate their food. Hell, they could eat it out of a dog food bowl for all I care. (Actually that would be pretty h...)

Its just a fork, like any other, its just there so you don't have ranch steak

oh and Arbi
(at my house the bread is cut in the kitchen so we have no need for a bread/butter knife)
We just happen to like baguettes - and no I'm not french

Oops, goddamn browser,
anyway some more constructive things just so I don't get banned

The purpose of a knife is to cut food,
that can be done with a fork however, in fact I used only forks till age 9, but then again my food was pre-cut

The biggest reason I use a knife is because it makes it easier to put food on my fork,
so I don't have to use it in the uncofortable "upside=down" manner

I fail to see how it is "necessary" if I can manage perfectly fine with just a fork, unless it's soup which I use a spoon for. Ever heard of pre-sliced bread?

That what people who don't bake their bread eat, isn't it?

This maybe so, but how do you explain how these hypothetical people butter their bread at the table then, eh? Eh?

Well, there is such a thing as cutting it and buttering it before you get to the table or wherever you sit when you eat.

Dear god! :eek:uch:

But what if you butter too much? Or not enough?!
