I've made a tutorial showing my way of shading hair, again with the geredreth advance template. I'll do my best to keep explanations simple and understandable.
Four Step Image
Step One: After you have created an outline it's time to get shading. Take your first colour (after your outline colour), and mark out some shadow, have the shadow flow depending which direction the hair shall be flowing in. Take care when you do this part, it's the most vital and will affect your final result. Once you have completed this step, and your happy with your result, move on.
Step Two: Begin to follow the shadows you just made with your next colour, you can do this in two ways. The first way is to simple follow the shadows in such a way where you almost outline them (i.e. Hairstyle one and three).
The second way is to use the next colour to join your shadows together, I find this way to be really effective and creating texture.(i.e. Hairstyle two)
Step Three: This step is simple, fill the remaining blank area's with your next (base) colour, couldn't be easier.
Step Four: Now it's time to add some simple highlights. I advice when you add highlights to overlay them on your base colours, which is the colour you used in step three. Have the highlights flowing in direction of your shadows(step one), depending on which area of shadow the are closest too. For a better idea of what I mean look at the difference between step three and four in the female's hair.
Following these steps you should achieve a fairly simple yet well sprited hairstyle. I once again apologize for any poor explaining, I hope the image helps you where you don't understand what I write. I'd appreciate feedback on this tutorial, and enjoy seeing any work created with it.
