Does Halo = Overrated?

Now Halo fans, before you raise your pitchforks, torches, plasma grenades and needlers at me...I think Halo is pretty overrated. Do you think Halo is overrated? Feel free to explain yourself if you have to. :)

I thought the Original Halo was pretty good (Not exactly timeless, but meh) but Halo 2 was pretty much nothing more than a half-hearted rehash.

In fact, largely because the multiplayer maps sucked, and the weapons were grossly imbalanced, I'd go so fas as to say Halo 2 had one of the worst multiplayer experiances I've played.

And I play Half-Life 2 Deathmatch religiously.

You know, punkid, you say you liked .net better than .org, but if you'd posted this thread on the old .net, Cleric would have flamed you to cinders. And since he was an admin no one would have stopped him.

Halo is a slightly above average FPS. Is it overrated? Depends on who's doing the rating. If it's the Halo fanbois, then yes. If it's the Halo-haters, then it's being underrated.

Over-rating isn't based on whos rating it, its based upon the majority of people rating it the same way, if it has had huge media hype, lots of merchandise and such then you could classify it as over-rated.

Well I myself am quite a big Halo fan. I agree with Arc in syaing the first Halo was a success, and had great gameplay in my opinion. I went on too enjoy Halo2, though not as much as the original, the story line was more of a dissapointment. In the end I don't think its overrated, its a good game to play, and I eagerly await the third :)

I don't know what a lot of people say about Halo 2, but I love it. Well I couldn't care less about the campaign and story line but I just like the scifi genre and blowing up, splattering, assisnating fun of the online play. True you can do this with a lot of games, but I don't have others and i'm satisfied with this one :)

it's popularity makes it seem overrated. it's a good game and pretty decent shooter but when you look at how many people obsess over it, it seems overrated. like madden, but madden sort of takes that to a whole new level since it's a pointless series of games

Halo 1 was the best game of its time. It blew everything of that time away because it was so good. [/exaggeration]
Halo 2 is an awesome multiplayer game, the weapons are not all that imbalanced as people say, I mean... plasma pistol and SMG are the best dual weilded guns in the game (multiplayer with shields anyway)

I dont obsess over it, but I do play it a lot because I have lots of friends who are as good as/a little better than me and I am getting really good.

It also helps playing it on a 11 foot screen... (projector, in my basement)
with surround sound, huge subwoofers, and an almost soundproof door that goes upstairs... oh yeah!

Running Riot!

I'm especially perturbed over the psychotic anticipation for Halo 3.

We've seen nothing that even tries to imply that it will be anything but Halo 2 in HD.

Perhaps that's my big problem with Halo 2 - it's like a cheap knock-off of Halo 1. Like they tried to copy it exactly, add in dual weilding, and dropped the ball everywhere else.

There are also the people who say, "I don't care about the campaign! It's all about online!" The online component is the worst for me. The entire thing is practically built around weapon imbalance. (I stand firm, Kraft... sorry!) Every minute I spent playing Halo 2 multiplayer (not counting co-op, which if anything made the campaign better) was a minute I wish I had spent playing UT2K4.

Again, I liked the original Halo, but I don't understand why people were so obsessed with it. It's a game where there is something of a divide between the people who hate it and the people who swear it's the second coming.

Why do people talk about a Halo killer? What is there to kill? What did Halo revolutionize? Decent Graphics, below-par sound effects (oh god, never let those frikkin aliens speak again, and why does the SMG sound like, I dunno, someone's spitting), admittedly pretty darned fun vehicles, boring level design. Hell, I loathed the character designs almost universally! Elites look silly, and how the hell do they talk like that with mouths like that, the little guys are just stupid, and why does master chief look like an android motocross racer?

I just don't see it.

I would only go as far to say as Halo and Halo 2 are average games, with average gameplay. Aside from the pretty smooth vehicular combat, the actual gameplay is nothing more than you'd get from Doom, Half-Life, or even Duke Nukem 3D. You run, you shoot, you kill.

Story-line wise, I think, is where Halo hits home with many players. The cliff-hangers, the extended reading (read: books, comics.), coupled with the always impending 'next game in the series' allows for a lot of story content of a fairly unique Sci-Fi setting which many Sci-Fi junkies have been asking for for a long time. Practically everything new is just a rehash of something old, but Halo's story-line and world are fairly unique, and make for great games.

Edit:

@arcthemonkey:
Have you seen any of the articles on Halo 3's character design, or AI systems? I suggest looking it up, it's a good read (there are videos on it, as well.) It will definitely push you away from the thought that is it just Halo 2 HD.

Yeah, i prefered Halo1. Halo2 was ok in my opinion, but far too many people spend far too much time to it. I really don't see the point of spending ages on a multiplayer map fest when you've finished the main plot and had your fun on the multiplayer maps. Then, you might as well just buy another game. Halo3? ok, if it's crap, then i won't be surprised, if it's good, i won't be surprised either (because bungie can do good stuff). Halo wars (the RTS) will almost definatly be a flop. And the halo movie? I dread to think what that's going to be like... I just hope it's 3D not a stupid real-life idea.
ah well, i guess i'll be prepered to be flamed... But i actually would buy halo3 (when i get a 360) if it got a few good reviews...

I don't feel that the first one was overrated, but the second was so. The third looks good, graphically, but we can't know much until a beta/final release.

The Halo movie is real-life. There was a lot of talk about how they cast a black actor for Master Chief. It was also Postponed by Microsoft/Peter Jackson.

What is your basis on Halo Wars being a flop? Sure, it's not being made by Blizzard or Westwood/EA, but that doesn't mean it will be a flop.

I just don't like the idea of a Halo RTS game. It sort of ruins the aspect of halo (getting up front in battle)
However, if it doesn't turn out to be so, then i'll take those comments back ^^

Meh, I'd say its somewhat overrated, I just don't see what makes it that much different than other FPS's. It seems like a metroid rip-off if you ask me.
It did get a little too much praise but meh. I personally didn't like it. But to be fair, I'd give it about 7/10.

You say that like it's a bad thing.

And Halo as a series is yes, overated like hell. But that's only because people call it the holy grail of FPS games, Halo 1 campaign co-op was fun as hell, and I enjoyed Halo 2's multiplayer, both had their strong points, and both had a multitude of weak points that people that dislike them point out as making them trash, and people that like them ignore completely.

Halo 2 had a good matchmaking system, which was pretty innovative for console games at the time, though still years behind any PC FPS (well, most PC FPS games, battlefield games seem to not be able to figure out the whole menu thing), and that made it pretty good for online, because it was relatively noob friendly with the whole ranking thing, and the mainstream like controllers better than keyboard and mouse.

Now, if Goldeneye had an easy way for online play, it would be the greatest thing ever. License to kill mode with power weapons! Sniper shotgunning! Wee

EDIT: Also, how the hell is Halo a metroid ripoff? Different genres, the story is similar in that there are aliens... I'd appreciate elaboration both for the sake of argument and my own amusement.

Halo is a good game, I had alot of fun playing it at friends'.

However, it's just that, "good." Not great, just good. I never felt any real "pull" to the game. It also didn't seem really innovative at all.

But it's a nice party game(no goldeneye though....)

I agree with you 100% here. I think what makes Halo so good to some people is that you gotta have to think quick on your feet in certain situations...meh I don't know. I too don't understand why people like it alot. Again, I totally agree with you.

Metroid rip-off? How is it a metroid rip-off? I ask of you. O_o

I've played 1 and 2, and I really wasn't impressed. I thought it was supposed to be amazingly/maybe goldy fun, but it's wasn't. Played many shooters that were alot better than that.
