Dockland/Shore Tileset

Okay.. seeing as i have never made a tileset before i got inspiration to make one from the gRTP competition. My lineart isn't bad i just struggle when getting to the shading part of pixel art. So this will be my progression thread with this tileset. Heres what ive got from some work over the last hour or so. Let me here your thoughts/tips and i'd like to hear what you would like in the tileset, thanks.

I think it looks great so far. But how well does it tile? For instance, how would it look if you wanted to elongate the house and its foundation?

I thought of that.. and came up with the conclusion that this house is specificly small and will be the only house able to fit on top of the raised platform. However, i will make another house that can be adjusted into various shapes, but as i am a beginner i thought it would be wise to start off simple.^_^

But i could always retile the foundation decking and the wall of the house so your able to rearrange the size, if that makes sense.

EDIT: I'll attempt to tile it for set soon.. although i could do with a bit of help. Any tips? or does anyone have a template for HK?

Yah, I would recommend making the house one object and the foundation another, rather than drawing them together. GMS allows infinite layers, so there is no problem with layering hte house on top of the foundation to create whole thing. That way the dock can be used separately.

Off to a good start though :) remember that the dock boards should probably not be shaded even as much as they are, because they are flat. Probably you will want the top of them to be shaded with just one "base" colour, and have the edge only (not of all the boads but of the whole dock) shaded

As for size, check the Download Manager, there's a door guide for how big to make the doors (82x48pixels)
Walls should be atleast 3.5tiles tall (112 pixels). SK and I have been generally using 4 tiles for single story exteriors.

Check SKs, Erks and My topic and take a look at some of the things there to use as a guide.

Its not a bad start, but it lacks depth.

Another note: on the edge of the platform boards, you should see two layers if you are arranging it how I think you are. You should see the big beam that you presently have, and then you should see the edge of the planks making up the dock. Do you know what I mean?

Thanks for the tips guys.. i checked out both tanas and erks threads to get some tips and find out about some sizing. I revised the house alot and heres what i have now.. about another 2 hours work.

That is looking much better for scale, and your line work is going to be quite nice :D you still need to touch up the shading. The layout and structure are looking much better though. Right now the boards of the dock are shaded as though they are standing vertical, not lying flat. I will see if I can make you an example of what I mean in the morning.

I think i know what you mean, because of the lighter shade across the top of each plank?

I will most likely restart the colouring from scratch, ill just try to line some more objects and parts of the building for now.

If anyone has any ideas of what should be put in i'd be happy to hear them.

Add more variations on the planks: some tiles with much longer planks on the dock for example, broken planks, barnacled pilings, etc... more styles for the buildings so that varied houses can be drawn - eg. more variants on the beam patterns, broken walls, walls with barnacles and mould on them. Those are good starts for what you have now :)

In the longer run, just based on what we have now: an alternate stone dock (the two could be combined to make a nice interesting port town) more like in RTP, barrels, crates, pallettes of goods, coiled ropes, hanging nets to be hung from the houses or the edges of the docks, rowboats, fishing lines, and piles of boat related things like oars, sails, and maybe even a lofted boat frame under construction or something. That is very long-term though.

Oh and as you get better at drawing it will get easier. Start with the dock and house, then with a stone dock, and work up from there. Crates next, then barrels, then ropes and nets, then bigger things. By the time you get through the ropes and nets, drawing boats will not seem so daunting :D

If you work on this and I work on my European Town tileset, and you can make this even half as big as I plan to make the eurotown, we'd have two very distinctive and interesting city styles for the gRTP. I fully encourage you to think big with this set, although start small.

Okay thanks for the ideas, i'll work on a stone dock next, then start on small items such as barrels, crates, ores etc.

Well its been a while and i haven't been able to get much done on this with school, the mapping academy and everything else, but i have spent a couple of hours on it today and i've added a couple extra things.

As usual, post some critique on them and i'll see how i can revise them. As for now i will start adding some more pieces.

It's been a long time since i have worked on this at all, but finally i've decided to continue with it.

Heres an update, only a couple of hours more work. Everything is coloured, and have started to add some detail into it.

Your line-work is really solid, but I really dislike the colours you've chosen.  The different shades of brown don't compliment each other and overall the colours are too saturated.

Kind of restating what has been said before, but they seem kind of flat. You might want to add some shading and some texture to it. Also mix it up a little, try to add some variant to the wood. Make each piece a little bit unique making it more life like. This could be done by simply mixing up a few of the pixels in some different ways.

I dunno, my $0.02

Now that you mention it, they do clash horribly. I'll be sure to change the colours. Now that you mention it, they do clash horribly. I'll be sure to change the colours. Thanks for your comment.

Yeah i know they seem kind of flat, it was originally for the gRTP and there were strict rules for the number of colours used and the detail incorporated. Secondly, i did actually state that i've only just begun to add shading and texture, but i won't be adding much at the moment. I'd rather get everything lined out before i finish each piece completely. Thanks for your comments though.
