Dock tiles passability

Been wondering if there was a way to alter dock tiles passability under certain conditions (with events or scripts).

Specifically, when I place docks above walkable tiles, I'd like not to be able to walk through them in every direction, but just following dock's axis.
Also, when approaching the dock from another tile (see below), I have no idea how to make it display above the character.

Any tips?
 
I think the way I did this in the past was to have two dock tiles, each with different passabilities. Then I had control events on the edges of the dock tiles, which changed the graphic of the bridge to one of the different passability tiles, which allowed passing under/over the bridge.

I think there are several tutorials about if you search for "bridge", though I don't know any links right now.
