You guys might know that I asked you once about the class-ending times in couple of years ago.

But I really want to discuss something with all of you.
This thing is about school too, but this time I'm very serious.

I live in korea, currently 17 in american age.
I am High School second grader (11 th grade).

As you see in my profile title, I think the Korean eduactors are mad.
They want students to be locked up in school for a long time.
And they believes studying for a lot of time makes one become smarter -.

Also, adults, such as my parents and teachers says that it(education) gets intense and intense
So I should not be the one to be depressed or frustrated for studying a lot.

But....Can you imagine yourself staying for 14 Hours at school. I'm sure you can't.
Well, I survived a year with that environment. but.... as adults said it gets worse an worse.

And I won't saying this all thing if i can at least do something i want to do, such as listening to music
without concerning while recess time, or using computer lab so i could use RMXP and another things.

however, all that 14 Hours of schooltime is used to just study and 'maintain alive and awaken'.
And you might know that Korea has cramming system of education. Whatever we don't want to
study or not, there's almost none of freedom and rights of decision for us students.

It means i have to learn all the shit that school says to learn, and most of the personal
hobbies, characteristics, that sort of thing is ignored on class.

Also in school, disobeying teachers is considered almost as crime. we got busted,
wheter teacher is wrong or right. But when teachers did something wrong,
they just think that is a 'mistake', and don't really care about it.

Each day *(Except weekends) we take 6 normal classes 3 supplementary classes,
and Night self-studying time.

Each class lasts for 50 minutes and 10 minutes recess each ends of classes.
It is really pain in the ass to sit in uncomfortable chair for that much of time.
Lunchbreak for 1 hr and So do the Dinner Break. (I eat both lunch and dinner at school)

And one of the most frustrating thing is 'Night self-studying time'.
It is called 'self-studying' time. But it isn't. It is 'Study or Die' time.

in Night self-studying time(Let's call it NSST, shorter)is consisted of two parts.
1 hrs and 20 minutes first part, and 10 minutes of recess, then 1 hrs of second part.

sitting in chair studying for up to 1 hrs.
Yes. this is madness. I can't chat. I can't joke. I can't laugh. I can't even go to bathroom without asking.
during this time. Students must sit down, shut their mouth, and study on their own.
If someone chats, He got whacked in the ass by teachers with sticks. Once whacked,
sometimes it bruises, and hurt like hell.

Cellphones and Electronics such as Mp3, IPods are not allowed. If someone caught using,
It will be confiscated for 1 month. if someone caught once more, they confiscate it for a long time
and give it back when a semester ends.

And there's a special activities called CA, which we have once a week.
during this time, we do club activities which we chose in beginning of the year.

But... 50 minutes a week is not enough.
And guess what, it is not considered as important part of schooltime.
This gets skipped often by other events, which teachers say 'More Important'.

So, I think that 'More Important' thing was really important. but most of the time, it isn't.
Sometimes we just have another self-studying time, or call us all to the gym to advise us
with doubtfully-useable-advice.

Anyway, after all that 14 hrs of studying. when i arrive home, I still can't rest.
Because teachers give homeworks. Sometimes I can only sleep for 3~4 hrs.

What the.
sometimes i feel that I'm locked up in prison, rather than going to school.

And this thing is happening in every part of korea - except seoul.

So what do you think? Staying for such shitload of time at school studying without a point.
Is it the good thing for getting smart? or just a torturing students?

Write your opinion.

Ouch, that sucks. That's just ridiculous.

Yes, It should be fixed. I have to be fixed. I hope we can study better in future.

check out this manga, dragon zakura (also adapted into a live action j-drama/comedy). It deals a lot with actual(?) methods to study while, as it seems to me, maintaining a high level of cramming-style school found in east asian countries (or anywhere not USA i guess :P)

studying shitloads like that is not good for you, or your mind, and definitely not your ass. I'm not even sure why you would need to know such things, or why studying/cramming entire hours is needed in the real world. Face it. Lots of things you learn in school will not be all too useful once you're outside of school.

I doubt much reform is coming anytime soon. Korea's fairly stabilized, as far as I know, so social and educational revolutions might not be coming all too soon.

Lolwut, if your government thinks that you'll get smarter by studying 80% of the day they're pretty retarded.
I would imagine that going to school for such long periods of time will only make you less motivated and cause you to learn LESS.

Hey, even japan is better than here. at least, japanese schools have club activities today
to meet up fellas, and teachers don't hit students at most of time.

and as you say, yes. It is stabilized, but everyone hates it. but governors
and educators don't seem to change and says this is the right thing.

and that thing raped up the whole society, i think.
i just realized the truth when i got into the High school.
that, in Korea, less study means low quality of life. Ridiculous.

Getting bad grades and going to bad college almost means no job, no money, no honor, no fame. WTF.

YES 100% agree. Studying things that i don't even want to put in my brain sucks like a shit.
And y'know, people says 90% of the things that they learned from school is totally useless.

Spending more time at school has two effects:

- The smart people feel punished and also can't spend that long fully focused
- The people who don't want to be there just mess around even more

It's silly, like the UK raising the school leaving age to 18.

That's true - In fact, there are about 350 ~ 400 People in each grade. and ....
more than half of them do not study at all and just bully someone for just fun,
prank on someone everyday .... and go to lame school and FAIL.

Well, sometimes someone success their life even though they graduated shitty school..
But it's really rare to be happened.

And i also think most of the students in there have serious mental problems.
They can't maintain calm and quiet. they always want to talk loudly without
caring other person studying. but that's not all. They do as they please.
They would smack someone just for fun, and only think about their benefits.

I'm also one of the people under suffering....I'm kinda scared ...and hate 'em.

So i could say that students are almost scums.
It would be helluva better to get rid of those people who don't want to be there.

OR OTHER PEOPLE WILL ROT.

Maybe, I'd better immigrate to U.S or somewhere?
But I'm also worried, because i heard U.S students bully Korean students a lot.

<Seung-Hee Cho, korean college student in U.S, murdered a lot of people because he got bullied so bad. And after that, Some people started to have misbelief that us Koreans are all that kind of person.>

The whole world has a bad view of Korea lol, mainly because nobody knows the difference between North and South. When people in the UK think Korea, they think Kim Jong Il and goosestepping soldiers.

Bullshit. North and South is completely different. and sure, i'm the south one.

in North Korea, most of civilians starve to death, and they can't possess their own property
since it is the Communism Country. and only president and his families live rich as hell.
North Korea is the one of the 'most fucked up' country, and they're really poor.

in South Korea, people live good aswell. Most of people have more than one computers on their home.
and I could say half of the things are same as world do. It's democratic country.
And also, South Korea is well known to have high-IT technologies,
and one of the most powerful company in the world, SAMSUNG, is South Korean company.

But only thing that sucks in south is stupid president and governors make country rot,
and as I told, CRAZY EDUCATION.

And yes, north is even hated by south.
South korea gave some several food supports to North since civilians starve to death.
But, north bombed south with cannons this year! and the food we gave didn't really
given to civilians. Kim Jong Il, that bastard ate it all. and that's why he is so fucking fat.

that's a good thing in my opinion.

as for this shit in korea? man that's seriously fucked up. people won't have the energy to study or learn, it's completely and brutally pointless.

Well ... Yes. Everyone thinks it should be better. shitload of time doesn't mean efficiency in study, right?
but it's really frustrating because it gets worse and worse. i think governors should change their opinion.

It's silly, like the UK raising the school leaving age to 18.

UK Leaves school at 18? That isn't much brutal. Koreans leave high school in 18 since 1960's.
but after high school, i have to go to college. So... actually leave out of school in 22.

And one thing silly - In korea, almost all of people graduate collge/university.
even construction workers who does all the boring works graduated college.
Because without graduating, It's almost impossible to get the job, LOL!

At your age I was working... six and a half hours a day, including an hour of breaks, and two half-days off a week.

LOL. You can work at that age in your country?
Wow. in korea, at my age, only very-easy part-time job is allowed.

Oh wow...That's an insane amount of time they are forcing out of you. That seems like a terrible thing to go through. >.>

The 8-9 hours I do makes me go crazy. I am surprised and impressed that you have made it this far doing that much work without going crazy or something.

You stay at your school over night? :O

Most of us just get used to this, because we are forced to be used to this, or we fail.
Yes. this is insane. and sometimes crazy guys appear up. I'm sure school is spoiling us.

And one of the serious problem is that some of them with too much stress
hurt others for getting rid of their stress. It's really bad behavior, but they seem to
feel no guilty.

And when that kind of people cross the line, they can even dare to kill others.

Last year, I heard that a middle school 3rd grader, Won-Wee Choi, killed his friend,
Sung-Dae Hong, just because his friend slightly collided with him by mistake. Can you believe it?

'Hong' apologized for his mistake, but that bastard, 'Choi' don't even listened to it
and whacked his friend with chair until he faint.

After when 'Hong' arrived to the hospital, he was already dead.

And here shows the rotten side of our country ; that 'Choi' must be put into a jail for his guilty,
but he used his parents to bribe school, police, and even media companies. So, everything
written about this murderer is deleted. This thing even broadcasted through the TV.

How the fuck this could happen? Cloaking one's crime just because of the money - ...
Yes. not only education is wrong, whole country is wrong for some reason.

We didn't have any murderers like that yet, and I don't want that kind of thing to be happen anymore.

Yes, first graders end at 10:00 pm(22:00),
11:00 pm(23:00) for second graders,
and maybe..0:00 for thrid graders.

And If i am brave enough to just leave my family and start a new life,
Yes, I would. but i'm little bit afraid of going to place that i don't know.......
But, I'll think about it.

Little question out of topic :

that avatar on 'crispyfaggot'.... is it his own picture? or he got it from some funny-pictures web?

Fourteen hours of class? My daily quota in medicine school is ten hours, without accounting lunch hour and study breaks. Usually I spend thirteen or fourteen hours in school. Even though, I think you're lucky to live in South Korea. Where I live, not everyone has access to quality education. I was lucky enough to be able to afford private education. Anyhow, when you're a student, you hate being a student. Someday you'll realize it really wasn't so bad.

Sounds pretty ridiculous. When I was in high school, there were some people who would do so many extra-curricular activities, it would probably add up to around 14 hours a day. But then that'd be about 7.5 hours of school and 6.5 hours of optional activities that they (or their parents) would pick. And I sure as hell didn't do that.

Sometimes I have to work for 12-15 hours straight and I feel horrible afterward. I'd hate to think of doing that every single day.

In college I worked full time ... 8.5 hours of work, followed by 5 hours of school, and 2 hours of commute travel. That was Monday through Friday, then usually 17 hours of homework for Sat-Sun. And that kicked my ass so hard, my health started failing. I started getting sick all the time and my joints were on fire. Sucked a lot!!!

I feel for you man!! But atleast it'll feel like a HUGE relief when you graduate? :x
